Woman gets bag of money 'to go'

A Florida woman who ordered a breakfast at a McDonald's drive-through was also given the restaurant's takings.

Janice Meissner only wanted a quick breakfast of a bagel and Diet Coke from the outlet in Weston.

But when she got the bag, she noticed it was "super heavy" and when she opened it she found thousands of dollars in a zipped-up bag.

McDonald's officials wouldn't say exactly how much was in the bag, but said they used a McDonald's bag as a security precaution. They said the bag appeared to have been left too close to the drive-through window.

Meissner said she reversed her car and told a staff member what she had just found in the bag. "She turned white as a ghost. She didn't realise the money was missing yet. She thanked me. And that was that," said Meissner.

McDonald's officials say they'll send Meissner a thank-you letter and $50 (£30) in gift vouchers, says the Sun-Sentinel.

Reliable staff.
How kind of Meissner. I would have taken the money and driven off.
What would you have done?

It would have been very tempting to run off with the money. But I think I would have given it back, eventually. No, sooner rather than later.

At least, I hope I would have.

Good for her! It's nice to see people don't always take the temptation route nowadays! :goodjob:

One would have given it back, of course. To do anything else would be dishonourable, dishonest, ungentlemanly and downright un-Christian. Jolly good show from the woman who did the right thing.

As a side note - they sell bagels at McDonalds?

I would have driven straight off.

Why do I never get such luck? :(

Until I have been exposed to such a situation, I cannot state a definitive outcome. My first impulse would be to return to get my breakfast.

I'd like to say I would go back and return the money to them, but reality sets in and a few thousand dollars would have my foot to the floor and getting out of there before they realized what had happened. I might feel guilty about it for a few days, but free rent and food would help me get over it rather quickly.

Until they capture ye and send ye off to prison for theft, what with the security cameras covering the drive through, carparks, etc.

I have worked at a McDonald's before. They have one camera in the drive-thru pointing at the register, not at the customer. Perhaps some higher class McDonald's do have cameras pointing at the drive through customer, but the majority do not.

McDonald's usually has a camera trained on the license plate of each car that drives up to the window, so they wouldn't have had much trouble tracking you down.

At none of the McDonald's in either of the two regions I have lived, is this true. However, it has been quite a long time since I've held such employment. I suppose the situation may have changed.

Even so, it's not as if I'd stolen the money...they gave it to me!!

If they ever tracked me down I'd just act dumb, say I found the money in the bag but didn't know how it got there...just make up any old rubbish about Santa putting it there, or God rewarding me for my actions :D

[I'd also make sure I spent it pretty quickly or hide it or move it to a Swiss bank account]

yep. a bagel variation of the popular "biscut" breakfast sandwiches.

my experience with one left much to be desired. the bagle was so tough, it actually lacerated my tounge. stay far, far away.

I would have given the money back, but I would have gone inside and made a huge deal about it, chiding them for being so careless with their money. just for kicks.

A $50 gift voucher is grossly insufficient to award her honesty. At least give her the award in actual cash!

I would love to say I'd be a lovely little lamb and give the money back, but I'm not sure I would. I might just drive off and if I get caught, I'd say I didn't realize I'd taken it. I would say I came home with "the food" and started watching a funny show on TV and got distracted. I'd say I'm lazy as all get out and forgot to "clean up" the "nasty uneaten food." If I never got caught... well... shopping spree! :D

I probably wouldn't have given it back right away. But after a day or two, I'd have to return it, I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
