Olympic Games should be determined by an AP-like event:

3 Cities are chosen (biggest, most profitable..something) randomly. Then, all the nations vote on who gets it.

i agree, damned good idea, perhaps top 10 for more variation, it happens every 4 years as it is.

Hmm, what about the folloowing wonders for the 21st century:

Greenland/Antarctica Settlement: once the ice is gone you could settle there

Banghladeshi resettlement: 140 milliono people living in an area that will be seafloor in 2100, and they ain't the only ones (guesstimates go from 500 million to 1 billion that need to be resettled in this century)

Swimming Netherlands: there are already swimming houses in the Netherlands, swimming cities are in planing so why not take it firther: a swimming country?

Submerged Arcologies: once you got your feet wet, you can start diving as well

and so on. A significantly rising sealevel will make new world wonders necessary.

maybe a swimming city national wonder that only can be built in coastal cities, and they also have to be threatned by flood, what do you say?

Perhaps the national wonder "coastal flood defences" could be built?

if they are not built a rising sea levels event could cause coastal tiles to lose 50% hammers, 50% food & 50%gold?

good idea, and also an addiction 70-80 % chance of flood event in city reducing 1 or more population.

Good idea, but If this happens then it will usually be: Tokyo, New York.. something. How do they choose the city anyway.

They don't choose the city; cities themselves have to submit entries, then they are whittled down to one by a panel.

Then should we display it the same way in the game as in real life?

    aye, true.

But coastal defences against rising sea levels, vis a vis global warming, would be on a massive scale and of immense cost, therefore they warrant national wonder status to me.

    Some ideas:
    (tech reqs not shown)

Cure for Cancer (wonder, the clinic where it's developed)
+ 1:), + 1:health: in all cities, unlimited doctor specialist

    The Space Race:

    Spaceport (nat. wonder)

Space program (nat. project, req. Spaceport built somewhere)

    Moon flight (req. Space program)

    Mars flight (req. Moon flight)

    Moon colony (req. Moon flight)
Provides 1 He3 resource from Spaceport (required to build He Fusion Plants)

    Mars colony (req. Mars flight)
Provides 1 (some rare mineral, required for something cool) from Spaceport

Alpha Centauri Expedition (replaces Apollo Program, req. Mars colony)
    Allows building Spaceship parts

    The Space Elevator
    +50% Space Race build speed

    Orbital Solar Collector (req. Spaceport)
Free Microwave plant in all cities on continent

    Then the existing wonders:

    Three Gorges Dam
Provides power for the city it's built in, the Orbital Solar Collector does what the vanilla TGD does, +25% production

Other existing wonders (Pyramids, Angkor Wat, etc)
    + :culture:

    Another idea on olympic games:

And basically the city who presents the most impressive and convincing application is chosen.
So why not representing this by a wonder race. Every 8 years (or so) before Olympic Games a new wonder becomes available to build for everyone. For example by 2012 the "Olympic Games 2020" wonder can be built by everyone. Who is finished first will be hosting the games in 2020. This has no effect initially until 2020. Then it could:

    - Give happiness
    - Give good relations (maybe no possibility to declare war at this time)
    - Start a golden age

Of course there can only be one Olympic Games wonder per city.

BTW: Planning a golden age long ahead might be an interesting gameplay feature.

I recall seeing an Olympics mod somewhere (while trolling through the downloads link). I think it allowed countries to compete for the bid somehow, but maybe not by building a wonder(?). So, it could be recurring as mentioned above.

For north pole drilling, this isn't a wonder, it's just a feature of 1) global warming, and 2) desperation/competition for resources/money. One way to handle it would be to put oil/other resources under the ice at both poles (note: south pole has some land under the ice, north pole does not except for Greenland etc), add the icebreaker mod (WoC?) and/or wait for global warming to melt the ice, and then allow exploitation of the resources with drilling rigs in the usual manner.

Well, we can have an Olympic council that decides every 4 years (not sure the turns) were to have the Olympics, we can kinda base it off of the Congress feature in Rhye's Rhyes and Fall of Civilization mod.

We here in Chicago are actually building a tower taller than the Freedom Tower (300 feet taller than the spire on top of the freedom tower), called the Chicago Spire, which when finished (2012, 1-2 years before the Freedom Tower) will be the 2nd tallest in the world, after The Burj Dubai (the lumbering giant in Dubai),
I don't know if you want to add another wonder or something. Just posting ideas.
