Workers build around units instead of wait to be prompted

If you tell a worker to auto route from A to B and a neutral sits in the way somewhere along the line, the worker will go and build the road around that neutral, even if the neutral moves the very next turn. This usually ends up as a huge detour if mountains are involved.

On the other hand, if a friendly (i.e. your own unit) blocks, the worker stops and asks for prompt.
