Workers of the world, unite! [RFC RAND]

1260 Our military consists of 1 Archer, 3 Longbowmen, 3 swordsmen, 1 catapult, 1 chariot, 5 horse archers and 2 warriors, with another catapult and horse archer almost ready. Eight workers means with just one more we get 6 points instead of 3, and there are two sitting in Argos.
We have very bad exploration, but from the little we know Turkey might actually have more chances to flip Artashat and Argos than Hattusas. The area near Hattusas is too near to Russia and Mongolia to be Turkey's spawn. Argos and Hattusas aren't really in the best locations for us so I think we should raze both. I guess the time of Ivan the Terrible has come!
The main concern is about economy. Vikings have already Civil Service, Guilds and Compass. A quick search reveals we have only a hamlet in the whole Kingdom, this should be fixed asap. It seems China is sending 2 confucianists to Scandinavia so I won't need to build any... good !
Stop to workers building unneded roads, science to 60% (-3 gpt) and the Dreamers Age begins!

interturn: Hattusas moves 4 axemen toward our borders

1270 Kiev Horse Archer > Settler (due in 4). The AP (Apostolic Palace, not our first Czar) proposes open borders with all members. We vote against as we already have OB with those we want. Argos hurried a spearmen and our Baron reports we can't take it without losses. Our answer is "what do we care ? Cost it what it will, it is imperative to raze it soon, because I had a dream, or better a nightmare of a worse future if we let it fall to others hands!".
Kiev Horsemen are trained in flanking and sent as support in the siege of Argos. Two swordsmen sent to the hill above Argos hoping for an unwise sortie from the greeks. Azov charioteers with their medics are sent to the German troops to help with healing. One more turn of siege.
Our spy discovers Berlin and Wien, both christian cities. Science back to 50% (*cry*)

interturn: one Hattusas axeman defeats an unwise viking scout, the others retreat to the safety of the city. They are getting several promotions...

1280 Moskva Catapult > Trebuchet. Peter (Sankt Peterburg) Galley > Forge. The AP resolution fails. Japan, Russia and Mongolia against, vs Vikings and China favorable. Catapult trained with city bombing, the trebuchets will get the full attack power.
Hattusas: one of our horsemen regiments is sent to tease the barbarian axemen, another one to assess city defenses. Catapults move toward it as well. We spend quite some gold in unit support.
Argos: no sortie sadly, and the situation looks dire, but the Baron orders the assault: catapult loss vs archer, flanking horsemen retreat vs spearmen (down at 1.6!), 1st Horsemen defeats axemen, swordsmen loss vs General Lee (axemen), 2 swordsmen defeat 2 archers, Azov charioteers stand their ground or we would present the city on a silver plate to Germans.

Civ4ScreenShot0000.JPG

Civ4ScreenShot0001.JPG

interturn: Teasing horsemen defeat hattusas axemen and attract three more regiments outside the city. A new civilization is born: the Turks! Incredibly, the Germans did not finish off any of the greek units, and Argos rushed another spearman... we're screwed again!

1290 Hattusas: two horsemen regiments defeat two barb axemen (three promotions in two).
Argos: swordsmen defeat catapult and General Lee. The new spearman can't be defeated and the other one is healing. Our swordsmen are too fatigued and it seems we will have to hope Argos doesn't flip to Turkey. Regardless, the Baron receives congratulations from the Czar.

interturn: Gibbon has completed his greatest work: The Largest Civs of the World ! Tsardom of Russia is 4th, after China, an unknown civ, and Persia. Mongolia is fifth.

1300 The borders of Kiev expanded, including more horses and silk in our borders. Peter expands its commerce from 9 to 16 in one turn. No known city flips to Turkey, nor do we see them anywhere. They spawned even further south than we thought.
Our galley with the spy aboard discovers the confucianist Oslo and Nidaros. They are big and well developed cities.
Swordsman defeats spearman (16xp now), scoring more points towards a Great General. Orders for our Barons are now to use more caution and limit losses since Argos and Hattusas aren't at risk of flipping. Our economy is poor and we have only 3 decent cities, the highway to reach Jaroslavl is proceeding slowly and it will be some time before this useless siberian village will grow into a productive city. We can recover by settling two russian cities on the sea of Azov instead of Argos and Hattusas, and build hamlets whenever possible.
Science back at 60%, Civil Service due in 24 turns. It seems none is going to trade with us...

1310 Moskva Trebuchet > Trebuchet (2). Kiev Settler > Settler (5). Joe Matsie (Great Spy) is born in Moskva, switch to merchant. Increased commerce in Kiev and raised to 70% science (-2 gpt), Civil Service in 16.
Settler sent to the baltic coast. Great Spy sent to Peter to be later embarked by the galley, which just spotted Dutch borders.

Civ4ScreenShot0006.JPG

Germans could have taken Argos but continue to avoid it (at least they are bombarding city walls). Argos builds a unit every two turns. It is now defended by a axeman and a spearman and our units must rest. A Horsemen regiment is sent to pillage its copper. Trebuchet moves toward Hattusas.

interturn: Teasing Horsemen regiment wins its third battle against barbarian axemen. China spreads Confucianism in Peter.

1320 met Willem van Oranje, he looks forward to years of peace with us, but we look forward to his technological knowledge *grin*. Silk for Fish and a gift of 20 gold pieces are enough to sign an open borders deal.

Civ4ScreenShot0007.JPG

Galley unloads the spy and heads back to Russia, meanwhile our ship scouts count 4 Viking caravels. They are doing pretty well...
workers improve Peter for as much commerce as possible. Added another merchant in Moskva, Civil Service in 13.
Argos: Horsemen pillage copper and spot Corinth to the south. It didn't flip to Turkey either. Germans moved two to meet our stack and benefit from Azov charioteers medics

interturn: met the French, they are furious with us. Ignore mode: on. Rome collapsed.

1330 Archangelsk founded on the Baltic Sea.
Hattusas is an easy prey now, and with a worker too.

Civ4ScreenShot0008.JPG

Civ4ScreenShot0009.JPG

Espionage: all focus to Netherlands.

1340 Moskva Trebuchet > Settler (4).
Trebuchet moves towards Argos, Great Spy embarked. Jaroslavl' whips Library. Persia collapses.

1350 Jaroslavl' Library > Walls (5).
We can commerce with Japan. Silk to Japan for Stone (yay!)
Hattusas razed. It had nothing except 6 pop points. Barbarian worker enslaved. Our triumphant Horsemen finally spot Turkish borders accross the Sea of Azov.
Bad news from the western front. We still can't take Argos and all this delay has been exploited by Germany which is sending a settler...

Civ4ScreenShot0010.JPG

Civ4ScreenShot0011.JPG

interturn: Germany founds Frankfurt.

1360 Kiev Settler > Longbowman (4)
Argos: the Baron is hard pressed by the Czar and commands another bloody assault. Flanking Horse Archers charge against Spearmen in order to distract them. They weren't fully rested so they had lower chances to succeed in the manouver (48% retreat odds). But instead, they charge directly against spears and surprise the Greeks, who break their formation and get slaughtered (translation: HorseArchers defeat Spearman with 1% win odds ). This regiment shall be now known as Steppe Horsemen. Azovskij Charioteers dispose easily of the axemen, pillaging 104 gold.
The Czar is posed with a dire choice. Argos can count on Forge, Harbor and Granary. Frankfurt is sitting near pigs so we are unlikely to win them culturally. Should we raze Argos for pigs maybe in the future or keep it and have copper sooner ? The Czar decides that there is room for all three cities: Archangelsk, Frankfurt and Argos, and spares the city, although he knows his successors will probably not approve this move. A russification process is started in Argos, and the city changes name to Azov, although Mikbikosk was another viable choice. This city is known for its buddhist cult, and should soon be converted to the one faith, Confucianism, to stimulate culture and production.

In 1369 ends the Dreamers age of the Tsardom. During this age the military didn't see improvements in numbers but it did in quality. Commerce was more than doubled and almost tripled in Peter. Expansion wars against minor nations were successful and a Great General emerged in Moskva. The siberian highway to connect Jaroslavl' has been completed. Civil Service is in reach (7 turns).

Civ4ScreenShot0013.JPG

Civ4ScreenShot0014.JPG

note to Czar Nodykov:
the settler is ready to found another city on the Sea of Azov southwest of Moskva. In that location it will have fresh water, 3 hills, wheat, clams and cows. It won't cross except for 2 mountains so our touchy playmates should be satisfied. Some units haven't been moved: I leave you the choice on how to move the spy in Europe and wether to meet Turks with Horse Archers or not, while the Great Spy is on the galley headed to Amsterdam. We'll have one more settler because I thought to raze Argos, your choice where to send it, although I suggest north of Novgorod, where we can grab rice and furs (or keep it for later, in case our maintenance will suffer from settling the city on the Sea of Azov). I would send the Great General to Azov and attach it to the swordsman with 16xp, that way we won't pay gold to promote him to maceman and won't lose his xp. We need to find russian names for our Great Spy and Great General. Some Courthouses wouldn't hurt, for example in Peter, where the forge is due next turn. Ulanbataar south of Jaroslavl' doesn't have monument yet, apparently. Maybe we can even steal their iron before they pump out units! I would build Castle next in Jaroslavl', for more defense and culture. Don't forget to convert Azov. The tech situation is bad...

Civ4ScreenShot0015.JPG

So in the end we were taking about the same tiles... I guess that I would have done something right even on your high standards.:crazyeye:

Bah, you're taking things too seriously. Mine was just a remark and an advice because during the organization of this succession game there were complaints about cities lost on spawn of new civs. I gave advices on how not let this happen but I have been literally mocked. Since then we saw that what I had foreseen happened exactly, I expected at least some recognition of such advices... you don't want to agree, ok fine, just don't claim that I am attacking anyone. I thought in a succession game it's normal to comment and post remarks on others turns and take decisions together whenever possibile. If you think otherwise just write it clearly without getting all set up or pretending to be shocked if I build cities at 4, 3 or even 2 tiles away.

I agree keeping Argos was the best choice. If in a future war with Germany we can take Frankfurt and raze Artaxata, we will have a good 3-city front with them, and if we pump our culture we can take their silk and stone, and get more space for our winter effects when defending.

Good job using the workers efficiently on the road to the east - no wasted roads and most resources hooked up on the way.

For Cossacks, you also need Rifling. They're a Cavalry replacement, not a Cuirassier replacement.
Oh, right. Getting ahead of myself.

Archangelsk seems to be a good spot, and will become another rich port-city in the future, so will the soon to be settled city southwest of Moscow, on the black sea. As I've said before keeping Argos seems best to me, and I greatly approve of this.
Oslo and Nidaros seem rather tasty as well, but we'll have to get a good tech advantage first, maybe when we get our UU we could easily take them (I'm guessing we would only keep one).

yeah, a save would be nice, but I forgot it at home >_>
... So I'm afraid Czar Nodykov will have to wait tomorrow morning.

We can use this time to discuss on the future though. Jaroslavl' has 0 culture and will grow in 5 turns. If I am right, we would steal iron from Mongols already from the next turn, or when we expand in 5 turns, so we won't even need to build a mine on tundra iron to get the resource. Once we get it we should start making 4-5 Pikemen. The only problem is that we have only two cities that can really produce military units and right now we should build something to defend Archangelsk and the soon-to-be-founded city.

Those Germans are always so damn expansionist in RAND.

Is this very high likeness? If so, I'm surprised to see so much silk in Europe.
Bet there isn't any in Asia. Instead they probably got wine.

yeah, a save would be nice, but I forgot it at home >_>

It's Nodijski, but whatever... what victory(s) are we heading for?

... what victory(s) are we heading for?

Not culture.

I'd like to go for UHV myself, although that was sort of ruled out by micbic in the opening thread. Russia's is one of the few UHVs I like, and I have not managed it yet (on regular RFC or RAND), due to slow tech.

If not UHV, then diplo or domination via vassals?

I was thinking of a space victory, since it was what USSR wanted to do, and after a phase, you will roleplay USSR.

Yeah domination sounds good, or diplo if we can't manage due to stability.

Space Victory is a nice challenge in RAND, because usually you end out of time before completing it. At this point it will be hard to achieve it because we are behind in the tech race, so I think it's a good goal: thumb up.

You don't know where the aluminium is so that's a good motivator to claim as much land possible.

I hate time victory, I enabled custom scenarios so I can disable time victory.
I never managed to reach the interesting victories before 2020.

couldn't access CivFanatics this morning, anyways here is the file. What about our Great People, do we change names to Russian ?

Space victory sounds fine by be. Actually, I don't think I've ever done one. (My computer crashes a lot once late 20th c is reached.)

But, if we go for space, it seems that we may also be going for UHV, unless we
a) take care not to settle too far from capital,
b) delay Apollo until after 1950 (that might be easy, though)
c) plan to lose a city

What about our Great People, do we change names to Russian ?

Why bother, they often disappear after 1 turn (tech bulbing, settling in city)

Only GG's should have Russian names, because they are in the picture for (hopefully) a long time.

And so Nodykov the First (AKA Nodykov the Honorable) began his reign over the Russian Empire

1370 - The year of the General

A Great General was born in Moskva and was sent to the rich Greek colonies in the south-west to claim all of them for Russia. All the warriors were upgraded and the Kievan archers finally learn about the longbow.

1400 - The year they found Iron

Iron is being found by some settlers of the Eastern frontier city of Jaroslavl.
After he heard of the discovery of new resource, Nodykov demands the establishment of a mine by the workers that already were improving the surrounding lands.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0104.jpg

1415 - The year of Diplomacy

Civil Service is finally discovered and Czar Nodykov demands the imediate upgrading of all Swordsmen and Axemen units to Macemen. After being taken by the teachings of Confucius, the Czar calls for a more centralized government that allows no non-Confucianist influences. Of course Qin Shi Huang immediately becomes good friends with the Czar.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0106.jpg

The exploring horse archer near Astrakhan meet the Turkic Ottomans who rule the lands across the Sea of Azov. They posess a rare herb that the Confucianist Russians found very useful for their religious services. Caliph Mehmed the Second is very open-minded about his non-Islamic neighbours and is willing to trade some incense for some wheat.

1420 - The year of the First Knights

To the west the southern Greek colony of Korinthos is conquered by the horse archers of Azov (former Argos) that were ready to fight another battle.
For their bravery the first iron that is excavated from the Far East is send to them to improve their armour and develop new powerful weaponry. The new upgrading units call themselves... KNIGHTS!

- another group of colonists from Moskva, hearing of the riches of the south, go towards the area that was meant to be settled by the people of Astrakhan, they call it New Russia (Novorossijsk)

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0114.jpg

- The Macemen, Horsemen and artillery units of the West are sent to Moskva. Nodykov hopes his succesor will liberate the people of Novgorod some day.

Being content with his people's accomplishments he crowns his first-born son, Anothrov Pacifiski II, named after the first Czar and founder of Russia.

A funeral is held for the Czar were his last request was quoted: 'To have all of Russia with his new conquered peoples learn the wisdom of Confucianism.'

Ah, Nodykov was an ambitious one, with a mind of his own.

Good work on getting the iron and on expanding the empire (perhaps we were moving a bit too slowly for you), but...

All the warriors were upgraded and the Kievan archers finally learn about the longbow.
Those warriors and archers were for sacrificing to the plague. So I am afraid that's wasted money.

A spy that was roaming in northern France hears of the espionage advancements in the Netherlands. He goes to Amsterdam and founds the Great Spy handing him a new technology that will advance Russian military and economics greatly.

The techs would have been half-price if you had waited 5 turns.

Then the group of colonists initially send to the See of Azov are told by Nodykov to go farther eastwards to keep the Mongols from advancing west.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0099.jpg
Why didn't you go one more tile SE? (you could have had a gold and 2 more wines, and the cow wheat would be taken by Novorossijsk.)

the Czar calls for a more centralized government that allows no non-Confucianist influences. Of course Qin Shi Huang immediately becomes good friends with the Czar.
Confused about this one. Is it to get the Chinese onside in a war with the Mongols? Is the anarchy worth it? I usually stay in the very stable combination of HR + Vassalage for as long as it is beneficial (until the Renaissance).

Sorry about the gripes. I enjoyed reading your turnset, otherwise, and ever Czar is their own boss - what is done is done.

Now, to the future: We need to take Novgorod back!!!

Agree with Danger bird, you made some mistakes, but no biggy - if you learn from them it would make them worth it. I'd also raze Corinth since it doesn't seem like a good spot (too much water tiles and not enough land).

Overall though the Empire seems in good shape, we've got knights and expanded quite a lot, we should be ready to declare war against the Mongols soon, bot don't forget about the western front and the German threat.

I also agree with above comments. Placing cities might have been slighly better, but it is okey. Losing 50% more espionage points is the only thing that really bugs me. That's one less tech to be stolen from the dutch. The civic change was rather pointless too, since we don't have much buildings anywhere but Moskva, we should change back OR and vassalage. EDIT also burecracy doesn't suit a big empire like Russia.

Enjoyed reading it though. :)
