Workers of the world, unite! [RFC RAND]

We should also be trying to generate another spy, so some cities that are running engineers should add a spy to them.
We need to involve Germany in another war. France is Christian so is friendly to it, so maybe Vikings?
The Turks might be willing to help us in our war if they make peace with Arabia. China is self-sufficient and won't declare war on anybody.
Another thing we can do to make the Germans less hostile is to convert one of their cities to Confucianism and use some espionage to convert them.

I guess if we do just that it will be enough to have them beg for peace.

My point exactly! :)

@onedreamer Everybody already agrees about the science being a problem, so please don't argue about it. Anyways, apparently you haven't supported a large enough empire to value the espionage points correctly.

Futhermore, great job taking Novgorod back AP! :goodjob: Though I would value a save as well.:king:

Sorry, here's the save. (much of the military buildup was done by Nody, so I'm just reaping the benefits)

(much of the military buildup was done by Nody, so I'm just reaping the benefits)

Don't give me credit for it, I've merely upgraded a lot of units already built.
The only units I've build were longbowmen for the newly conquered and founded cities.

1. Yusofsvk II is crowned as Czar. He orders troops to be assembled in Jaroslav. We get Gunpowder, Khmers ask for it before we even get the discovery screen. :)
Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0000-1.jpg

2. The Confucianist Council wants to end trade with those arrogant Khmers. Yusofsvki II votes against this.
3. The resolution is passed anyways. Yusofsvk II sacrifises his own citizens to complete some buildings in the newly acquired areas. (No point having slavery if we don't use it)
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0001-2.jpg

4. Yusofsvk's spies tell him that Mongols have gathered troops in Ulaanbatar.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0002-1.jpg

5. The main armies have arrived at Jaroslav and more come all the time. (We need cannons)
6. Yusofsvk's armies lay siege on Ulaanbatar. His cannons began bombarding the city defences.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0003-3.jpg

7. More buildings are completed in the outposts of the empire.
8. Siege of Ulaanbatar continues, the shortage of cannons is delaying the attack. This will be the battle of the era.
9. Siege continues, Yusofsvk's cannons have crushed the defences
10. Ulaanbatar is nearly ready to be taken, but Yusofsvk holds off the attack to get more cannons. Yusofsvk's spies discover the holy city of Christianity. However, Yusofsvk II dies later this year. The cause of death remains unclear, his doctors are suggesting it was food poisoning.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0004-2.jpg

To do:
1. Ulaanbatar should be razed on the next turn, everything is ready for it.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0006-2.jpg

2. I whipped buildings (courthouses, castles, etc.) to the new areas to get some infrastucture, cottages built everywhere.
3. Economy will be going up very strongly in the future turns, we should aim for liberalism, after education we can trade for philosophy, get some money and run 90% science to be first at it
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0005-2.jpg

DangerBird is up. Good playset, we are in a good position and there are no dangers nearby, except for a danger bird of some kind.

Hey, did someone rename Novorossijsk to Rostov-na-Donu?

That was the original name of the city by founding, but I changed it to Novorossijsk because I see no Donu (river).

Hey, did someone rename Novorossijsk to Rostov-na-Donu?

Hmm, weird, I did nothing to it.

Just looking at the save now, and will start soon.

Immediate objective: raze Ulaan Baatar. Then look at strength of the army and decide whether/how far to continue.

Will also economise as much as possible, continue building up commerce, to have the best shot possible for Liberalism. But with China already having Edu and Phil, not sure of our chances on that one.

During the mid-16th-century, the Russians were blessed at home and in the faraway fileds of war. Towns throughout the land prospered and caused commerce and learning in the cities to flourish. The soldiers on the Eastern campaign, inspired by the fierce Opasnost Pticy Regiment, were enjoying a feeling of invincibility as they exacted Russia's harsh revenge on the once-feared Mongols.

1530
Espionage: Need to contact Netherlands again; a galley is sent out from Peterburg into the Baltic. The spy in southern Europe is instructed to return north.
Foreign situation: France and Germany are at war. Good news. Maps are sold to the two adversaries for 120g each.
The Mongolian campaign: There are just enough cannons to begin (next turn) the attack on Ulaan Baatar (thank you, Jusos), but more will be built to carry the campaign forward. Horse archers are upgraded to knights with the cash from the map sales.
Moskva: sets specialist to spy (and occasional additional scientist), from engineer.
Workers: consolidate their efforts to get priority improvements done first.
(Press Enter.)

IBT: Another regiment of Mongol pikemen arrive in Ulaan Baatar. Turkey wants to renegotiate deal (it seems to have another source of horses now) - we now get ivory for deer and silk.

1535
Moskva: Missionary > Cannons. Jaroslavl: Cannon > Courthouse. Azov: Castle > Temple.
Send missionary to Korinthos, assuming cultural pressure on Jaroslavl will be reduced soon. Hurry forge in Novgorod (3 of 8 pop).
The 1st Battle of Ulaan Baatar:
All 4 cannons survive (including first at 27%). 1st Horsemen (at 52.7%) defeat pikes! The other knights, macemen, and war elephants are all victorious, and the Opasnost Pticy Regiment is given special honour. Mongolian forces are severely reduced. Ural Horsemen move to defend cannons on iron hills.
Spoiler :

1540
Peterburg: Market > Musketmen. Novgorod: Forge > Library.
The 2nd Battle of Ulaan Baatar:
Weakened cannon bombards, City easily overwhelmed and razed. All regiments intact (!), though some badly worn down. Healthy units advance to protect city raiders, weakened units retreat to Jaroslavl where Azovskij Charioteers have arrived with their medics. Meanwhile, an advance force from Novgorod finds the Mongolian capital.

1545
Moskva: Cannons > Pikemen. Kiev: Courthouse > Grocer.
Missionary spreads Confucianism in Korinthos. Eastern Campaign forces healing.

IBT: German Prag is captured by France.

1550
Moskva: Pikemen > Aqueduct (plague is coming soon, and the healthier we are, the briefer it will be). 'We Love the Monarch' in Moskva.
Hurry grocer in Kiev.

IBT: We disrupt and expose a spy ring near Kiev (cannot determine for whom they were working). China researches Liberalism. :(

1555
Archangelsk: Monastery > Temple. Kiev: Grocer > (1 turn) Aqueduct.
Spy gets a look at French Prag.
Workers1555_prag.jpg

1560
Moskva: Aqueduct > Longbowmen. Kiev: Aqueduct > Musketmen. Peterburg: Musketmen > Grocer.

1565
Azov: Temple > Buddhist Monastery. Nodygrad: Forge > Monastery. Novgorod: Library > Monastery.
Hurry grocer in Peterburg and forge in Korinthos.
2 Keshiks and several mercenaries appear in Kharakhorum, as bombardment commences, and troops are still advancing to their positions.
Workers1565_outsideKharakorum.jpg

IBT: Netherlands pleads with us to declare war on Germany: decline.

1570
Moskva: Longbowmen > Missionary. Petersburg: Grocer > Aqueduct. Korinthos: Forge > Monastery (now that it is Confucian, need to concentrate on culture here). Jaroslavl: Courthouse > Barracks (this will become a good eastern military centre).
Spy arrives in Aken (an easier target, i.e. cheaper, than Amsterdam).

1575
Moskva: Missionary (to Jaroslavl) > Knight.
Plunder Kharakhorum's copper mine, and all regiments surround the city, including seven cannon batteries on the hill.
A Great Scientist emerges in Moskva, and builds an Academy (long term, as we still have over 200 turns and over 130 to 1950, this is the best use I believe).
Workers1575_Academy.jpg

IBT: Mongols attack (with 1 catapult) out of Kharakhorum onto the hill NW.

1580
Kiev: Musketmen (to go to Azov, then Korinthos). Peterburg: Aqueduct > Research. Novgorod: Monastery > Temple.
Missionary converts Jaroslavl.
The Battle of Kharakhorum
1st cannons (unpromoted, at 32.5%) defeated, all other batteries survive. Opasnost Pticy Infantry starts the charge, followed by war elephants and knights. Kharakhorum is razed with all regiments returning intact!

Workers1580_razeKharakhorum.jpg

Notes:
  • Why was Kharakorum razed? Because we still have to (if we want 1st UHV condition) found 2 more cities at a distance of 8 tiles or more from capital (right now Sankt-Peterburg, Archangelsk, and Jaroslavl meet that condition). We don't want that many more cities too soon, so best to just found 2 of our own between now and 1700.
  • The Mongols will capitulate now, but I recommend we press on, razing Samarqand and the city south of it, then found a city on the rice SE of Astrakhan (see map below). By that time Mongols will likely collapse. (Not sure where we should found our 5th distant city, though. Maybe in the still-unexplored far east, north of Mongols.)
  • The longbow SE of Novgorod, and the knight in Novgorod, still have movement points on this turn. they could be joined to the invading forces now in Mongolian territory.
  • Kiev and Peterburg are 'building' research for this turn, and several scientists are set in Moskva, Novgorod, and Astrakhan. This is so that we (just) get Education next turn. So Kiev, Peterburg, and Moskva can all start universities next turn.
  • Don't trade for Compass. Spy in Aken should wait 4 more turns then steal Compass cheap. We may then still get one more tech from Netherlands, if there is a cheap one we haven't got yet.
  • Religion: We have 198 of 446 votes at the AP (China just has 120). So we may be the next resident.
  • Workers are irrigating from river near Jaroslavl to the fields near Nodygrad and Novgorod.
  • Stability has been high throughout, now +31.

And the save.

Great job. :king:
I say we capture and keep Ulaan-Ude (great city on river) found another city 2E of Samarkand (or thereabouts), and capitulate Mongols to avoid respawn. Or we can capitulate them while letting them keep Ulaan-Ude as a buffer state between us and China.
Then our attention to turn to the Germans (great luck that France decided to attack)!
China might become crazy and attack us though, so make sure we fortify well over there.

It's Yunovsk Watitisky's turn again. Will he show up this time?

I think it is safe to say that it is BurnEmDown's turn.

About other stuff: razing lots of cities hurts our stability, so I wouldn't reorganize whole Mongolia, though it seems tempting. :p Maybe we should just found one city close to were Kharakhorum was and then another somewhere east/northeast.

Got the save, will play tomorrow, should be done by evening.
I think It'll actually be better to capture Ulaan-Ude as AP said and capitulate the Mongols, they will be a buffer state between us and Turkey (unless I'm mistaking where they are).
I'll look into it, Danger Bird's city suggestion on the rice seems very good too.

:) Yes, I was getting carried away by my battle rage. On second thought, I agree that we should vassalise Mongols to (hopefully) prevent their collapse and later respawn. Razing Samarqand and the southern city, and taking Ulaan-Ude, would certainly collapse them, so perhaps we need an alternate plan.

We could found near Kharakhorum, asap, before they settle it, take Ulaan-Ude, then vassalise. There is a chance that they will survive that.

As for a fifth 8-tile-distant city, there might be a good site to the far north or northwest, in 'Karelia' or 'Finland'.

Actually, we don't need another city, so leaving the Mongols with Ulaan-Ude isn't a terrible idea. Just found a city near their razed capital to catch the resources there and to remind them never to cross us again. :spank:
Having a vassal is great because you can direct their research and espionage with them is cheaper (because of trade routes and we can see their world map). Happiness will certainly be an issue for smaller cities when we switch to representation (can we? with so many cities and running bureaucracy no less) unless we have a vassal or two. (The Germans would make a great vassal, because they would insulate us and we only have to worry about the Vikings from the north)

Isn't it safe to say that as long as we stay solid they will never respawn?

nope

I'm pretty sure they will collapse soon, even sooner if they capitulate.

I doubt it makes a difference, fact is that they will collapse, so it's better to raze everything they built, although I think we kept their capital.
