Good grief ! How many World Cup threads have we got ? And can anyone seriously dispute that it's more than we can possibly need ?

Anyway, not having started one, I'm feeling somewhat left out (perhaps I'm the only European poster in "Sports Talk" who hasn't started one ?). So, I proudly present to you, World Cup 2006: The Other Side.

Inspired by a useless spacefiller in The Guardian, the idea is to post something culturally revealing about what is being put on TV on the other channels against (in terms of attracting viewers) the Soccerball World Cup.

In the UK, for the opening match, I'm afraid the other TV Channels have accepted defeat ratings-wise... We have "Ready Steady Cook!", a repeat of "Rising Damp" from 30 years ago, a 2 star rated film named "Bermuda Triangle" and a quite simply tawdry Noel Edmonds game show (still the only gameshow host, to my knowledge, to have overseen a death in one of the stunts on his shows). It is, however, a pretty revealing portrait of crap British TV.

So, come on, tell me what your society sees as good alternative veiwing to soccerball. And, please, I do hope for culturally revealing crud.

Not much use to comment from the US right now ... typical daytime fare. Saturday and Sunday should have more interesting counter-programming, I'll update then.

(Although I will say there are several networks very happy their championship games are at night)

Yeah, I don't see any counterprogramming from the US. Even on the weekend during the day we'll get infomercials and bad movies (like always).

I'm interested as to whether Fox will still do its MLB Game of the Week.

Why not? Its not like the World Cup is must-see-tv for people in the USA...

Didn't that involve a helicopter?

At any rate, UK television to counter the Poland vs Ecuador match seems pretty standard for a Friday night. No big guns, though from what I got on the radio Big Brother is pulling something pretty spectacular tonight. I don't know what, though, and I don't intend to find out.

Have I Got News for you though, that's about all I shall watch.

I concor with my american pisas above
