Tapping into the mood of the U.S. right now ...

WASHINGTON (AP) - First lady Laura Bush, who was to make her policy debut before a Senate committee Tuesday, instead stepped grim-faced to news cameras and tried to reassure an anxious nation.

"Parents need to reassure their children everywhere in our country that they're safe," Mrs. Bush said after Sen. Edward Kennedy, chairman of the Senate Health, Education and Labor Committee, announced its hearing on early childhood learning was postponed by the chaos of terrorist attacks in New York.

Her face pinched, Mrs. Bush tried to speak in a soothing tone. "Our hearts and our prayers go out to the victims of this act of terrorism," she said.

Within moments, it became clear that Washington was also a target and the first lady, surrounded by nervous-looking Secret Service agents, joined the hundreds of congressional aides who evacuated the Russell Senate Office Building. Mrs. Bush was whisked by motorcade back to the White House.

Like Vice President Dick Cheney, the first lady was then taken to a "secure location" that White House spokespeople refused to identify.

No offense, but Princess Diana's death doesn't even come close to this.

Don't know what network I was watching this morning, but a major US network, and now NPR as well, has confirmed that the car bomb story is FALSE. I am assuming such until I hear otherwise from a reliable source. The network had a reporter at the site and she saw nothing.

I've been hearing some thoughts that Osama Bin-Laden may be behind this attack from Afgahnistan. The Taliban Gov't there released a statement expressing concern and condemning this attack, but this is also the same nation sheltering Bin-Laden in exile. The American people will be calling out for blood in the wake of this tragedy, and if we do not get proper cooperation I think a military response is quite likely. One thing these terrorists may not realize is that once the entire nations sets itself behind a common cause there is nothing our government can do but follow along.

I know this is a hypothetical statement, but I also feel Bin-Laden to be a likely suspect and I also know the Afghan Gov't to be very anti-Western in general.

I heard talk that it could be an attack from someone within the USA its self!!

No offense, but Princess Diana's death doesn't even come close to this.

I totally agree!! This incident is much more important...

My wife works for an international adoption agency, and I just heard from her that their CEO is stuck in Dallas, and they have two upper management folks in Washington, DC and Pittsburgh who were to attend meetings in Washington this week. They also have three staff members traveling overseas just now. It's scary to think of how something so far away (from the West coast) could so potentially hit so close to home. Once again, our prayers and good thoughts go to AofA, Sekong, Thunderfall, and any others who live or have family/friends in NY or Washington.

I just heard that there were Palestinians celebrating these attacks in the streets of a West Bank Isreali town. That is just sick. Maybe some napalm would put a stop to it.

There are estimates of 10,000+ dead in NYC and possibly hundreds more in DC

The world has changed...forever......all the stupid details we live with day to day seem so insignificant now

Flight 11 is believed to be one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center.

It now appears people acting for Bin Laden were responsible. This has been said by a representative of Bin Laden directly to someone important (don't know who).

By the way, have you heard what Tony Blair has said? I love that guy!

No huge surprise there. Thanks, Matrix.

What did Mr. Blair say? Do tell! Share with the rest of the class!

Reuters reports...

U.S. Official Says Attacks May Be Linked to Bin Laden (1:44 PM EDT)
LONDON (Reuters) Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden warned three weeks ago that he and his followers would carry out an unprecedented attack on U.S. interests for its support of Israel, an Arab journalist with access to him said Tuesday.

On the other hand...

KABUL, Afghanistan (Reuters) (1:12 PM EDT)- Afghanistan's ruling Taliban movement Tuesday said Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden, taking shelter in Afghanistan, was not responsible for the attacks on the United States.

"What happened in the United States was not a job of ordinary people. It could have been the work of governments. Osama bin Laden cannot do this work, neither us," a Taliban spokesman, Abdul Hai Mutmaen, told Reuters from the southern city of Kandahar.

"We are not supporting terrorism. Osama does not have the capability. We condemn this."

Initial Reaction: Sounds like the Afghans are on drugs.

Stormerne beat me to posting the Reuters story.

I wouldn't trust the Taliban farther than I could throw them, but it still seems like only speculation that bin Laden is behind this. Certainly seems plausible, but hardly confirmed (at least publicly).

Blair said something about "mass terrorism being the new evil of this world" --understandable, but not very constructive, IMO.

The TV news are running nonstop right now. In fact I saw it as the building collapsed, on live television. That was unbelievable. there's probably no word for it. My deepest condolesenses to everyone affected, and all who has relatives in N.Y. and elsewhere affected.

I hope the US thinks carefully about the course of action. I don't think there is a political/military answer to this. -But as the US foreign secretary wisely said, "they can destroy buildings, or kill people, but they can not destroy the spirit of democracy". The so-called "free world" (whether you like that expression or not), might be vulnerable, but it can never succumb to actions like these.

Oh....that's a very good way to react.

Four carrier groups heading for New York and Norfolk Virginia. adds more air cover, and anti air capability.
One realizes that AA is fairly ineffective against passenger jet at close range, but thought that there would be some missiles defending defence nerve centre. Would turn it into a shotgun blast, however, so unenviable set of circumstances.

If there are scum out there celebrating this, then they should be nerve gassed Such action is reprehensible to man and God.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- Afghanistan's Taliban ambassador to Pakistan has condemned the string of astonishing terrorist attacks on the United States.

"We want to tell the American children that Afghanistan feels your pain. We hope the courts find justice," ambassador Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef said in a statement in Pakistan after America was hit by a series of attacks that have been called the worst since Pearl Harbor.

U.S. President George W. Bush has said they were "terrorist attacks" and American officials say their "working assumption" is that the attacks in New York and Washington are acts of "overseas terrorism."

They have added they cannot rule out additional attacks.

Officials say they had no intelligence beforehand that a massive terrorist plot was under way.

There have been a number of denials of responsibility by Palestinian groups and by the Al Quaida group headed by fugitive Saudi accused terrorist Osama bin Laden.

U.S. officials say they have no credible claim of responsibility.

Angered U.S.
The Taliban has in the past angered the U.S. for giving sanctuary to wanted Saudi dissident bin laden, described by Washington as "the world's most wanted terrorist."

Apart from the embassy bombings, U.S. officials also link bin Laden to last year's bombing of a U.S. navy ship in Yemen and with foiled plots in the United States and Jordan at the turn of the millennium.

The Taliban sprang from religious schools in Pakistan near the Afghan border and, with almost no military experience, swept from obscurity to their 1996 capture of the capital in only two years.

Beyond Pakistan, the Taliban have few friends.

Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates are the only other countries to recognize the Taliban as the legal government, but they have not joined Pakistan in maintaining embassies in Kabul.

The naval response is both to provide air/missle cover, but also to aid in the recovery and medical responses to the situation. Dealing with this is going to totally overtax the entire infrastructure of NY.

Was just listening to a live interview with someone from my own town (Eugene, OR) who missed a ferry, or they would have been at the WTC. As it was, they saw the second plane crash as they were boarding the ferry.
