World War II in the Pacific

Bravo. Enough said. :)
I'll get that bit of work you asked me to do for you to you soon.

Cool beans can't wait for the bts version Gaius Octavius. I was wondering about something though i haven't played the earlier versions so my question might be a little off but does your research upgrade units just in the ww2 era? just curious:king:

The techs are based on the C3C scenario, so they aren't too innovative, but each tech will upgrade units and abilities. For example, Divine Wind allows you to build the Kamikaze unit as Japan, and this tech will automatically be given to the Japanese if the Allies advance close to the home islands. I have not given much attention to the post-war period, if that's what you mean, since the game checks to see who is the victor in September 1945. You can, of course, continue playing beyond that, but the war will almost certainly be over by then.

Well, you'll just have to play and see for yourself. :D No, seriously, this one is more inspired by the Civ 3 scenario that came with Conquests, especially as far as the map and unit placement go. Additionally, I have a lot more scripted events than the BtS Road to War scenario does, the technologies are different, the units are different, and the game begins on December 7, 1941, as opposed to 1936.

Other changes that set this scenario apart:

The AI has been scripted to take paths more or less along the historical progression, and key battles (such as Midway) will be fought depending on how well you do. For instance, if you succeed in keeping the Japanese at bay early in the game, they will pursue a strategy along the lines of the Midway-Aleutians-Guadalcanal gambit. If you do rather poorly and allow them to overrun more areas, they will become increasingly bolder and will start to make war on regions that, historically, were never invaded in WWII.

I have tried to make the scripted events flexible to the player's path. The intent was to allow for replayability and "a few surprises" for those who take less common strategies. I have not had time to balance the scenario for all players, however, so remember that the first BtS version will not be perfect; nevertheless, that's what you guys are for - feedback. If it's too easy as one team, I will add reinforcements and scripts to make it more interesting. Balance is actually harder to achieve than many people think.

Well... yes and no... :crazyeye:

I have a working scenario right now, but the reason I have not uploaded it just yet is because of a bug in Dale's air bombing missions mod. Without that, the attack on Pearl Harbor is impossible, because ships cannot be bombed while in port in standard BtS.

Also, there may need to be a bit more testing done after I merge it, because other issues may come up and I don't want to release something that will be unplayable. (That's no fun.) However, Dale has found the bug in his mod and will be posting a new version soon, so probably within the week I will upload the full scenario, barring any unforeseen developments. And I will be relying on all of you to tell me what needs to be improved, since I've been swamped lately and have not managed to play it all the way through. :D

Your scenario is one that I really like and play often.
Since you are releasing another version soon, can I suggest changing some of the colours of the nations? Having Russia, Japan and China all in reddish colour is a bit confusing.

May be change Russia to Green and China to Yellow. This should be just a 1 min fix but enhance gameplay a lot.

Hmm, a good idea. I had not thought about that. :) (That's also how it was in C3C, I believe.)

And if you liked the Warlords scenario, you'll love the new one. :D I'm actually embarrassed by how limited the old one was compared to my new BtS version.

WWII in the Pacific Tops 5,000 Downloads

I am very pleased to announce that this scenario has now reached the milestone of 5,000 downloads. :D This puts it in the top three most-downloaded Civ IV scenarios in the file DB and it remains the most-downloaded modern DB scenario. I honestly never expected it to receive anywhere near that much attention - its success surprised even me. When I set out to create an adaptation from C3C, I expected it to appeal mostly to the crowd that had come from Civ 3 and wanted to relive some of those golden days.

Now that the BtS version, with all its new features, is nearing the final testing stages and other plans are becoming more concrete, I can only imagine what we'll do in the future. Cheers to everyone who has contributed in some way to the success of this scenario!

[Post 3000]

Congratulations, 3000 posts and a wildly popular scenario. I'm salivating over the idea of playing the BTS version.

YAY FOR GAIUS OCTAVIUS!:goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Anyways, I have a couple ideas for the BTS release:

1) Is there any way to code into the Python a "ping" (the MP option thing that "pings" a tile on the map)? If so, try pinging a set of tiles when an event shows up, like a Quest. Thus, for the Battle of Midway:

Our commanders are planning a major offensive near Midway. Have at least (X) ships proceed to the destination for combat with the Japanese/American forces.

Ping the tile, and set a command for "X" ships in a one tile radius, then the true Battle of Midway event after all enemy ships have retreated OR have been destroyed,..

Gooblah, you took the words right out of my mouth. :D

Although I don't actually use the Quest system that came with BtS, I have planned a number of quest-like events in traditional Python. For instance, the Doolittle Raid "event" (which I have not yet implemented) will instruct you to assemble a task force of your ships at a specific port by turn X, whereupon they depart and will be temporarily unavailable until they near Japan. Then you bomb Tokyo and get the heck out of there. :cowboy:

This lets you devote whatever portion of your fleet you deem necessary to the task - if you feel the war is going badly, you might send only one carrier and a few escorts; if you feel you can handle a larger attack, send a bigger force than was historically dispatched.

Well Gaius is actually almost done with the entire thing. I just have to give him a few more art things and we're good to go. :D

Really, you think? That would be so cool. I am so bored with Civ at the moment. The Spanish Civil War mod was quite good and it held my attention for quite some time. However, this sounds super fun - and the scenario from Civ 3 was a lot of fun. If this one is better I will play it over and over again.

I don't want to rush the guy, I'm just excited.

Terribly sorry. :D I have just been adding dutchking's new Kate torpedo bomber, which I requested for this mod, so I have actually been doing work. :mischief:

The scenario itself runs from start to finish without any bugs that I could find. However, I found that it is not entirely balanced yet, e.g. with the comparatively small tech tree and rapid unit construction the war can be over by New Year's 1944. So I've been concentrating on trying to make the AI more confrontational and thus more of a challenge. For some reason the BtS AI just doesn't want to fight as much as in previous Civs.

The download will be about 11 MB with animated leaderheads, or about 6 MB without, so I will probably just upload the full version - it makes things feel more polished. I hope to put it up within the next few days; I'm always the perfectionist, so I inevitably find one small thing left to do and tell myself, "Just one more change..." and then something else comes up. :D

Ha ha... to be honest, it's been so long I had forgotten about it.

Let me go back and look over it again. I hope it's nothing so major that it will delay the release. ;)

:joke:

EDIT: I guess the joke's on me. I had forgotten that I had already taken these into account when I did the Warlords revisions last year, so most of your suggestions were in fact implemented. (The new BtS system with interceptions and air bombing changed it a little, but for the most part it's been carrier over.) :goodjob:
