Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it...

There are four civs left in my game. I had mutual protection pacts with Greece and China, and Greece and China each had mutual protection pacts with each other. America was going it alone...

I was about even technologically, but had a smaller army than everyone else. I thought with my MPPs, I could just hole up and develop, and engineer a cultural win or something. (6 Wonders in my capital city--it should hit 20,000 culture points in a couple hundred years... plenty of time before the game ends.)

Then I saw taht Greece signed an MPP with America. Fine, I thought, now we're *all* friends.

Then the next turn, Greece attacked China, with whom they had an MPP! I never thought that would happen. So I was forced to declare war on Greece. And suddenly, Greece is *all over me* with infantry.

I too am only up to the level of infantry.

No one can take cities. All we can do is line up in front of each other and hope to destroy improvements. Which I don't want to do, btw--I don't like destroying AI improvements because that just means I'll have to rebuild them later.

Greece, of course, has no problem destroying my improvements.

This is getting bloody and I really don't want to fight, but I don't know how to get out of this without getting China mad at me. And China is one big mother.

Any tips for fighting WWI style wars? Or even better, getting out of them?

Lots of Arrtilary wins nearly every war.

I would just wait untill war weirness kills them all so switch to Monarcy.

Yes, Artillery will win you any war. As long as you have a few units to guard them, and the cities (if you decide to take them). If I was you though, I would just bombard the crap out of their cities. Make there production go WAY down. Then just ride out the war, until they get tired of fighting it.

This is the classic problem of civ games that mirrors real life in a sense. I was China against Korea and a moutain split was effectively no-mans land in my game. Anywho if you can be bothered to build artillery it works well, since infantry just can't attack very well and the assault unit (cavalry) is largely useless as well. All I can say is rush for the tanks, even with just 7 I completely turned the course of the war.

The German Panzer dominates any WW1 style war. Russia marched a 80 infantry SOD against me in my last game, and I shredded it w/ 20-25 Panzers, thanks to their early blitz ability. I think that the Panzer is the best UU if the game is still contested in the Industrial age.

mass AT and force them to fight a struggle of attrition, I wrote an article on how to fight WW1 style wars offensively in the strategy articles section. you can read that.

If China is "One big mother" they should be doing a lot to take out Greece or will be soon.

I would recommend making a Maginot line. Put about eight/ten atillery, and about four infantry along a line separting you, and the Greek forces. Build fortresses, and Barricades their. Try to use a lot of hills/mountains/forests, and stay away from Volcanoes. Build a railroad to all your cities, and your line, then build a railroad up and down the whole line. Mobilize for war. Build a lot of infantry/artillery, and refill all your ranks. When you can, move a large stack of infantry/artillery into enemy territory (don't take them from your wall, and keep supplying it). Walk them right up to your enemies cities across mountains/hills/forests, and then bombard the units in the cities down to one health (maybe one or two at two health), and attack with the infantry. Move all put about six infantry into the city, and leave the rest to guard the artillery that can't move because they have bombarded. Of course, and alternative is to raze the city.

in WWI, the british achieved a spectacular drive with their Mark IVs, at the Battle of Cambrai. wot u need are tanks. screw yore current research path and go strait to tanks.
