Worst start ever!

Okay, this happened while I was still playing civ1, but I was the Indians, and there was a hut 1 square away. As soon as my first militia came out (3 turns-bought part of it), I went into that hut. 8 calvary came out, killed my militia, and conquered my only defending city! 4 turns and I died!

I feel your pain. The same happened to me, only worse, because I started with two settlers. I built a city with one, the other released about 5 horsemen...
I've also "discovered" enemy civs on the first turn, when their settlers come up the river and destroy my first city.

That can ruin your day. Rivers are great early on for the trade they bring. But, they can bring a whole lotta trouble too! I've lost on my first turn before. I'd settle the mouth of a river, and some bastard upstream would pop a hut, and then explore with a horsie right into town, and that was it. That hasn't happened in Civ 2, but it happened once when I was playing Civ. That was back when I only had a 133mhz, and the world took about four or five minutes to build. I was not happy.

This happened to me in Civ I.

I guess that's what the magic save button is for.

first time I went onto emperor level on civ I got 2 barb cavalry on my 3 turn and got trashed...I thought WOW what a stepup in difficulty and avoided emperor till my skillz were 1331. Then I trash the difficulty level and now deity...it was JUST such a shock!

I have to say that my worst start ever is probably in Game of the Month #1! Those of you who've played this one know how a wrong strategy could be calamitous. No more to say otherwise it would be spoilers. As an academic exercise I'm seeing if I can survive, but I doubt I'll get past the 20th century. Oh well, there's always GOTM #2!

I have to agree about the GotM #1 map. It is quite possibly the worst map I've ever had the extreme displeasure of playing on. I have tried every trick I know, and a few new ones made up on the spot, and the damned neighbors keep waltzing in and smushin me like a bug.
I went militant, couldn't keep up with the tech. I went tech, got overran. It's an untenable position. Anyone who does well on that map is flat-out cheating, no bones about it.
I've been playing so long I practically beta-tested this game, and to no avail. I don't cheat at solitaire, so I won't be submitting an entry this month.
I do await next month's map though. Hopefully someone will enter a map set on HUMID instead of DESERTS and MOUNTAINS only.

I've also had a similiar experience. Just
recently I played a game with a few mates
and I had the worst terrain possible. My
first city was on the coast without any
whales or fish and it had 4 block I could
irrigate surrounded by hills and mountains.
On one of these mountains was a lone hut and
the rest is history...my fate was sealed. I
did not die, but with the combination of the
bad terrain and barbarians I was doomed to
be the weakest civ in the game.

My only comfort comes in knowing that things
like this happens to everyone.

My worst start was when I had only a settler, it was my first turn, and the computer shut down. The world was instantly wiped out and turned black, taking me with it!

i always win no matter how bad my start is.

Always? I somehow think not.

How about worst end???
GOTM #2 was nearing to a close after the defeat of the Vikings when I experienced the "WINDOW THAT WILL NOT CLOSE" phenomenon. I had two Civs to go and tried frantically to close the friggin city window. Since I hadn't saved in nearly FOUR hours I of course have been smashing my head up against my desk ever since.

Please no smart a** comments about autosave.

Glad I found a place to vent my frustration...

As Fred Sanford would say "Lamont ya big dummy!".

It doesn't get much worse than this

It isn't that bad Smash...I think I could work with that.

certainly. I pride myself on being able to overcome lousy terrain. I often play on maps of nearly entirely snow/desert.

Once I started on a two square island. One Mountain, one swamp. IT was not cool.

i play desert and mountain maps on purpous, cause i like them.

also island maps. i love the little 2 square islands. your civ turns out like the southern pacific, and you have a HUGE fleet... i love that

You're all a bunch of loonies! Decent terrain is paramount.
