What do you think thr worst/weakest trait is? For me Seafaring seems marginal.

On island maps it's gift from god!

Yeah, try England on an Archepalego map and watch the gold roll in.
The "worst trait" will always be subjective to the map settings/difficulty level.

like much of the stuff on civ u have to know how to optimize any given trait or uu. Seafaring is good for early cash. Gets an extra commerce. also the extra movement can explore scout like for contact and trade with other civs early...

If you play on Deity/Sid the worst *has* to be Expansionist. On Sid I know of no-one who has popped a tech or settler from a hut...

I'm looking at playing a seafaring civ next. I was considering either Byzantine (for Dromons) or the Scandinavians. I liked the idea of Dromons as early faster catapults and the idea of doing early naval assaults with the vikings. Capture city raze it and then get back on your ship.

Also considering Carthage as the computer palys this civ really badly.

The AI plays Carthage badly? On almost every ocassion that I have played them they have been a force to be wreckoned with!

As far as the subject heading goes, I think Expansionist is the "worst" trait to have.

In 3-4 games I have played on Pangea or Continental games Carthage is small and primitive. Its understandable on Pangea maybe but continents as well?

what do you get? Just gold? That is kind of sucky, however, IMO, just removing the chance of popping barbs from a hut is a great benefit. (On the highest level, you don't get any bonus dmage against those guys! )

Carthage, when played by the AI, get held back because they build 30 shield units very very early in the game. This slows the rate they build settlers to expand.

Like others have already said, I is highly debendent upon the map you are playing.

For me it does depends on the Map type, but generally I find militaristic fairly useless all round (unless you HAVE to win by conquests/domination)

Agricultural, while it ahs its uses, can also be fairly useless, esp. considering some of the better traits like religious, industrious.

I also find commercial fairly useless, unless you need money (as in a higher setting then chieftain)

Expansionist is almost always dead useless for me, since I seem to have bad luck with the goody huts anyways, and all expansionist does for me is to give me more useless money/maps. I don't usually get settlers or the free cities out of them, ditto with free techs.

I usually stick with Industrious/Religious combos.

I'd say religious. I'm sorry but I only revolt once, max twice a game.

Not that religous is all-bad, but I like the rest:

Scientific - Free techs!
Expansionist - Pretty obvious why its great now...
Seafaring - You may hate it but I like the 3-move Curragh. That thing is great, even on Continents.
Industrious - Eh, its OK, not my favorite any more.
Agricultural - Gives you a boost once you leave Despotism and makes river cities even better...
Miltaristic - More Elites = more GLs.
Commericial - Its basically more money. :)

Overall I find religious the least useful...

Yo, why is expansionist great now? Personally I still think it is a worthless trait. Since it is not guarantee that you will get a tech/settler everytime, and sometimes you will even pop some barbarians. I would rather have my warriors exploring, using other traits and grab some experiences from those barbs. I remember once I am not expansionist but I still get republic off a goody hut. They should give expansionist benefits in producing settlers than making barbs more friendly.

hey, i tried Scientific, and i thought you got to choose your free tech at the start of each era... ...but when i entered third era, it forced (would only give me) Medicine. I wanted Steam first!

I tried doing the turn over, clicking different things, starting the era different ways, ...always Medicine.

What gives?

Militeristic can be nice, seems like Germany should be a stronger civ because of this but they always get killed in my games. Militeristic got weakened a bit by the new system of great leaders not being able to pop a great wonder. But armies got better-so i do not know what to conclude...I have been using militeristic civs lately to see how to optimize that trait...

Yo, why is expansionist great now?

Early contacts. Since you can no longer sit on your rear and wait for someone else to find you and then easily buy contacts to get you back up to tech parity. If you do that now, you may be left way behind in the tech race and you can't buy contacts until Printing Press. You need to be more aggressive in exploring to make contacts to have the trade opportunities before they are gone. And that task is alot easier with expansionists.

I'm not sure I would say it is the 'best' trait, but it sure can work wonders and keep you in a game you shouldn't have been in. Same goes for the 'suicide' curraghs for the seafaring civs.
