All the articles and stuff ARE helpful, but I think I would benefit more from a one-on-one conversation, so I can ask "WHAT THE **** DOES ___ MEAN" and cry uncontrollably (as I often do).

Would anyone be willing to take me under his/her wing? *puppy-dog eyes*

Its hard to reply a post like this. if you want some help post a game around 1ad and ask for some advice.

I dont think there is a civ 4 helpline or depression line. There isnt right?? Unless someone like TMIT/kossin is on speed dial.

Upload a save onto the forum.

Play a BTS game wtill 1ad. Save the game. Then attach it to a post on a forum using the paperclip icon on the message options.

If you want help on the game look at the strategies and tips forum. There is so much info there you cant go wrong really. Everything you need to master this game up to deity is stored within this forum. You just have to understand the basics to start moving up the levels.

What level are you playing at? Noble? prince? monarch? Emperor?

Post a save at a certain point in your game and folks will critique and give advice. One of the best ways to learn on the board. Later you can run a shadow game where you update and report at certain points - some folks may even play along.

Also, meant to add that the forum is as good as chat. Lots of good folks here who will respond quickly with good advice.

I don't see why pming a messenger account to answer questions is so bad. If a friend just started playing, would you answer his questions or tell him to post on the forum and wait for your reply there? Just because there is one standard format doesn't mean everyone has to do it that way. *Puts finger on nose*

do these forums have an active IRC channel or something? I'd imagine that would be an excellent way to discuss things.

$0.99 cents per minute to hear you talk about your Iron Golem? That's way below the market rate.

    ---
The IRC is terrible, and the site doesn't have the numbers to support it.

    I am a necromancer.

We don't say "y'all" where I'm from. It's just me being cute. Also, Canada is a really big country and the dialect changes from province to province.

Trying to understand people from Newfoundland? Yeah right.

    Youre good now?
Still need for help or just useless necromancing?
    :D

    1. Start a game (bts).
    2. Post the start here (pictures OR savegame file).
    3. Tell what are you going to do on first couple of turn.
    4. People give you feedback.
    5. Ask questions.
    6. Wait for answers.

    Other alternatives:
    - Watch good players play the game on YouTube.
    - Read war academy articles.
    - Play the game more and learn from mistakes.
    :)

I've only actually played on Marathon. I should probably get over that and play on Normal if I want to post saves, yeah?

Clarify something, please. If I post a save, how do you figure out what I've done 'til then? Are you just looking at the situation and seeing how well I COULD have done given my beginning and then looking at what I have actually done and figuring out what I could have done better like that?

Ideally, if you run a learner game here, then you should post in very small turnsets - as small as you are comfortable with - but no more than...say...20 turns. Shorter the better.

^^^Succession game is an interesting option that I helped encourage Sir Clive with early. His game is currently in process over in that subforum. Basically start a game and invite people. Hopefully, at least a couple of experienced players join in. If you play it right, you can basically get turn by turn advice, as well as see the thought processes of more experience players as the plan and play.
