Here's my problem. I like playing on Win by Conquest, and that's it. So every one of my games has been focused mostly on producing a powerful military. At first, I did this by mass producing units. But I soon found out that my Longbowman would get his ass kicked by a knight/cavalry every single time. So, I decided that technology was the key to military success. The problem with that is that my opponents always out-research me. So, I've not been able to win a game no matter what. Am I looking at this game the wrong way?

Longbowman do have a nice attack of 4, unfortunately though, they suck when on the defensive because of their defense of 1 and they have limited mobility, so unless escorted by pikeman or musketmen, the faster units will pick them off.

I prefer using the horse upgrade path of horseman-knights-cavalry. The horse units have more mobility for faster assaults and pillaging and can retreat from battles to live to fight another day. Plus, your horseman and knights can be upgraded, whereas the longbowman doesn't upgrade to anything.

You could try the 0% research method. Set science to 0 to save up money and just buy techs from the AI and have money for upgrades, and/or get the techs through peace treaties.

I'm not sure if that'd work..I tried a similiar way, but f-ckhead Alexander wouldn't even sell me his techs. What are you supposed to do then?

You should base youre goals on becoming a science cow and to put yourself ahead of everyone else, then when you have access to tanks and Mech inf. then let the killing begin...

    Alexander is a pr!ck.

Starting the game with hoplites (1/3/1) makes him arrogant.

I'm not a great player but this is what I'd do:

Make sure you get the great library, prebuild some other wonder (pyramids or oracle), then transer the stored build for that over to the library.

Turn science off and let the comp. players do all the research for you, with the exception of quickly researching chivalry and perhaps republic/monarchy. Sell republic/monarchy off to everyone who has lots of gold, they'll pay a fortune for it.

Build lots of horseman and upgrade to knights when chivalry is researched. You'll have loads of money because your science has been off most of the time.

Go on the rampage and destroy a weaker neighbor.

Take his land and blast off from there.
