Okay, so I took over an enemy city, and stationed about a dozen infanty in it. After several attacks from dragoons (or first type of gunpowder calvary) and some cannons (1 vs 1, not bombard damage), the rest began to lose to musket men. My trained infantry (+1 attack, granted) lost to them repeatedly, with the last one losing to a friggen war elephant! What gives?

Well... that makes sense I guess... even though most of the cannons withdrew or died? Well, the civil unrest from just being captured... I take it that makes a huge difference huh?

A siege weapon (ie cannon) will *always* inflict collateral when possible, even if it withdraws or dies. If it withdraws, that means it also redlined the unit it was attacking (not what you want as a defender).

I've used draft rifles + CR II cannons to overcome infantry + MG defenses before, though I prefer having artillery if my opponent has infantry, since arty is much better at handling infantry and anything that comes later.

I think it is useful to quote this:
odds
pl.n.
1. A certain number of points given beforehand to a weaker side in a contest to equalize the chances of all participants.
2.
a. The ratio of the probability of an event's occurring to the probability of its not occurring.
b. The likelihood of the occurrence of one thing rather than the occurrence of another thing, as in a contest: The odds are that she will get the nomination on the first ballot.
There is no battle is civ IV that has real 100% chances of being won/lost . So , once in a blue moon ( btw , there was one today :D ) a weak unit will win against a much stronger one....

It doesn't surprise me, one time I lost a battle that I had a %99.9 chance of winning. I couldn't believe it.

One I lost an attack force of 12 Modern Armours to 1 redlined scout. True story.

EDIT: MA's were full strength too.

Holy cow, you should contact the Guiness book of world records Charles. I'll bet something like that only happens once in a lifetime.

Stupid boyscouts and their poisoned cracker jacks. :joke:

Back on topic: have drill Machine Gunners to take down their collateral DMG on their counter attack stacks.
