I'm having a tough time playing as the Americans and winning this scenario. I've won three times on Regent with Japanese but cannot for the life of me develop a plausible strat to deal WITH the Japs.

I've scoured the boards (and the search is disabled) for help on this and haven't found anything. Can anyone help?

With UK i managed to take vietnam and pushed the japs back to there china border but then time was up.. took me to the near end goes to get near vietnam.. but it was lightly defended

USA: I started 1 game.. then quit cos i couldnt be bothered..

Yeah you get so few cities with the US, that i have only played as the Japanese

just played a game as the usa and managed to really batter the japs.. i pushed them back to the chinese territory then time ran out

i was battling the gates of tokyo for ages tho..

Whaddaya think nukes are for?:nuke:

Dropping on San Fransisco. (How do YOU like it?) *evil grin*

The location of the US cities and the range penalty regarding corruption are the main problem of US cities in this scenario.

While it has a touch of realism because it is true that US troops are really far away from home there, they should be far below the OCN - I think the main problem is getting some settlers over the pacific and build a good infrastructure and reasonable size cities before it is all over.

I've only played the scenario as America and was a little daunted at first, starting with so many units all over the map and having your core industrial cities so far away from the action.. but I quickly learned to build lots of airports and airstrips and just air drop the units my industrial cities pumped across the map right into where the action was instead of bothering with transports and escorting them. I quickly took all the islands with victory point locations and then moved into thailand, after taking the three cities which hold victory point locations on that penisula the game ended because I met the requirements for a victory point win.

surely nukes would be an option?

For the Americans, Manila is key to winning. Whatever you do, do not let Manila fall. What I did is rushed an airport in Manila, and made Combat Engineers in mainland U.S. and airdropped them into Manila. After the entire island was secured, used transports to cross over to Vietnam and liberated all of southeast Asia, but then the game ended in my victory (but not before I dropped 25 nukes on Japan  )

One thing that I tried last night worked fairly well: I sent an invasion force directly to Tokyo first. Amazingly enough, I was able to take the mainland as the Japs defense at home in the first 15 turns wasn't all that strong.

Of course, I bombarded the hell out of the cities to soften them up!

(Meltone: Are you at the University of Kansas?)

I found that steadily taking all the Pacific Islands back and then nuking/invading the Japanese home islands was enough to win, I never even landed troops on the Asian mainland. If you can sink the majority of the Japanese navy right after it attacks Pearl Harbor at the outset, then it's just a matter of time as you can build ships and aircraft a heck of a lot faster than Japan, and if you drop MG units to all your remote bases you can make them virtually impregnable.

Absolutely.

Marines and the massed bombardment of American planes and ships is the key to winning. Simply island hop from VP location to VP location before eventually descending upon Japan.

Besides, some smart person once said "Never get involved in a land war in Asia" - this is the only scenario I've seen where one should follow that advice...;)
