I've been plagued with the ever-so common problem of XML errors after deleting my Civ 4 & BTS from my internal harddrive and re-installing it to my external harddrive. Any suggestions or instructions on how to properly install Civ 4 & BTS to an external HD would be most helpful.

Thanks. I've been a 'guest' for quite awhile and finally decided to join. Luv Civfanatics!

My OS is Windows XP Pro.

I uninstalled all of Civ 4 (BTS, Warlords, etc) except for a few mods. Then I installed Civ 4 Vanilla to the E: drive (External HD), which it allowed me to change the destination. I tried Warlords (but unlike other posts I read) I never saw it 'change' from the default C: drive to E:, so I cancelled the install. I then installed BTS & it did in fact change the install to the E: drive after doing an update to Civ 4 Vanilla. I then ran the BTS 3.19 patch.

So far when I use the shortcut (which I checked & is pointed to E: drive) or go into HD & try to run it, both Vanilla & BTS start to load properly. The flow of XML errors begins at Load XML (uncached).

Thanks for your help. In the future, a sticky on how to properly install Civ 4 (et al) onto an external HD would be helpful as I searched for 2 hrs and still found no results in the forum.

I don't think there is all that much information on installing it to external HD - so I wouldn't even know what to sticky  Apart from the fact that this subforum already has too many and not too few stickied threads.

Now: I would probably recommend the following: uninstall everything. If you have some mods that you want to keep, move them to a place not in the standard civ4 install path before that.
For uninstall instructions look here.
Then install the game but at every step check that it worked. Warlords should install just as well to whereever civ4 is installed.
Once it stops working - stop and post where it does.

Everything worked fine according to your instructions until BTS install.

I insert the disk and it runs as follows:

Choose setup language (English)>Installshield wizard>Welcome (click next)>Software warranty & agreement (I accept; next)>I uncheck gamespy & register (click next)>Click install to begin (click install)>Runs setup search for updated DirectX runtime then closes suddenly with no error message or indication. I even watched it on Task Manager and it does not run in the background.

I noticed it also did this after updating both Civ 4 & Warlords the first time. I checked and both Civ 4 & Warlords are still playable & at version 1.74 (Civ4) and 2.13(Warlords) which is what I assume BTS was updating them to before the crash. I also rechecked Prog Files\Installshield Install Info\{32E4F0D2...} to be sure it wasn't somehow copied during the attempt to install and it does not show up. At least Warlords is still playable but all the gr8 mods are for BTS.

I read on another posting about copying the files from the disk directly to the C drive so I tried it and still got the same results.

Thanks for your help with this.

Yes, after installing directx from the microsoft website, it gets to the same point and crashes when searching for directx update. Not sure what to do now.

Ok...finally got it past the point of checking directx (not sure how...i had the bts 3.19 patch on my desktop; deleted it & also wiped off the back of the cd)...now I have a new error that occurs after it starts downloading:

Feature transfer error
Feature: DefaultFeature
Component: Warlordscomponent
File: D:\data2.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Well, believe it or not. BTS is now installed & updated to 3.19...not sure how but i whispered a prayer and attempted to reinstall BTS...it got through with no xfr error and is now working!!!

Thanks for all your help...now time to dwnld some mods :)
