XP question.

We recently added the SP2 and it is causing problems with some of the programs we had installed. At least I think its SP2. When I try to run the programs we had been getting an error C:\windows\System32\Autoexec.nt is not a suitable .... I copied the Autoexec.nt file from repair to System32, and now the programs dont run, but without the error message. Further, the CD wont run to reinstall them.

On the other hand the ISP works fine. I think perhaps the ones that dont work are all pure Win 95 tree.

I can't tell what your specific problem is without seeing your autoexec.nt file. Try this link for some info on how to setup this file properly, as well as the config.nt file.

SP2 is notorious for causing trouble like this, which is why I never installed it.

From the site, that looks good. Also its not DOS based programs that are not running, but older Win95, such as CivII.

The autoexec.nt looks the same as mine. The only difference between our config.nt files is that I have:

emm=ram

under the files=40 line. With these settings I can run games like civ2, but as I said earlier I am running SP1.

Have you tried running the programs in Win95 compatibility mode? Right click the .exe file of the program you want to run, then go to the compatibility tab and adjust the settings there.

Go to this page, download and run XP_FIX.EXE.

Also, I would recommend for everyone to upgrade to SP2, I've found that the majority of problems with it are caused by either problems with installation or incompatibilities with programs. When it is installed on a fresh copy of windows, and up to date programs/drivers are loaded, very few problems will occur.
