If you could control your country like in a game of HoI, EU3 or Vicky, what changes would you make? I'm not looking for specifics, i.e. no Muslims, legal weed etc, but more of a broad alteration you would make with regards to borders, form of govt etc. Nothing completely and utterly unrealistc, so no Catholic theocracy Saudi Arabias, and no Luxembourg annexes Russia.

Personally I'd like Ireland to be part of of a Socialist Federation including all of what is now the UK. Capital could be Liverpool, as it has lots of inhabitants form Ireland, Scotland, Wales and funny enough, England. Govt might be somewhere inbetween Yugoslavia was and Venezuela is, i.e. socialist, but with freedom to travel, redistribution of idle land, state not a tool of the rich etc.

Generally I like Canada the way it is, the exception being that I would abandon the foreign monarchy and transform the Governor-General into an elected true Head of State position.

I would give much more autonomy to the brazilian states and cut most of the subsidies that are today given to the less developed states. Those states should offer their own incentives for people and business to settle if they want to prosper. Currently Brazil is a federation in name only; in practice it is still the centralized empire it was in the 19th Century and most states depend entirely on the good graces of Brasília and this has a catastrophic political and economic effect.

I would also like a new Constitution, as the present one dictates an economic model that I dislike. I obviously want more economic liberalization, which means that I'd privatize all the state-owned giants. I would also like to see all indian reservations abolished and the law applied equally to everyone.

I want German borders to be roughly something like the Second Reich plus the Sudetenland and Austria (there's no helping those nutjob Swiss :p j/k), but the Federal Republic government system is mostly okay.

Independence for Catalonia first, then:

Borders: Catalonia and Menorca. Països Catalans only if possible and plausible.
Form of govt: Military dictatorship to warrant the control of the government over the bourgeoisie.
Religion: Freedom of religion, attacks from the goverment to the Catholic church in order to avoid becoming another "vassal" state of the Vatican City like Italy and Spain.
Economy: Keep the monopoly and control of northern african gas and offer it to europe as an alternative to the russian gas. Try to become a center of development of genetic and energy-related researches. Nationalization (total or partial) of La Caixa and gasNatural for strategic purposes.
Water: Build a bunch of desalinization plants in order to avoid the over-usage of the limited fresh water of our rivers.
Army: Dismantle any inherited institution, structure, unit, etc. from the spanish army. Create a brand new army whose tactics are based in assimetric war and whose structure is based in terrorist and clandestine groups (cellular structure).
Diplomacy: If America accepts our total control on northern african gas and western africa as our influence area, join them. If not, join Russia in a "gas alliance".
Spain: Mutual ignorance policy. Keep contacts between nations if extremly necessary only.
Society: Offer the spainiards the chance to leave the country during the first years of independence. After those years, repression of any pro-spanish group.

Think Mad Max in Ireland and that would be awesome.

Failing that, heres some realistic thoughts...

I'm actually quite content with Ireland's political system. I can only think of some specific changes that I guess could be summed up as a more liberal political culture. However some big changes are needed like:

  • Some sort of logical party system - conservative and socialist parties not the current anachronistic Civil War party system
  • Get rid of the political culture of corruption that exists, and the public mindset that its generally acceptable.
  • Totally abolish the HSE and start from the ground up, modelling it on something that works and with clear accountability for all. ( Notice how I have no specific solution )
  • More investment in infrastructure. It really is a joke. Dublin needs a proper metro not that proposed piece of crap right now. The LUAS is a joke.
  • I think education in Ireland is actually one of our stronger points but - No more compulsory Irish language learning, if people want to learn it they can choose it as a language in secondary school. Learn French/Spanish/German from primary school. No more preferential marking for exams done in Irish

Extra special fantasy suggestion:

  • Work ends at 4:20 for all jobs so we can :smoke: Thats my solution for the drinking problem here. Everybody should be more chilled.

I'm sorry RRW for getting specific but I'm not a proper revolutionary so all my niggles are relatively small. I'm happy enough with the borders. Also we should annex Montserrat as we need to have a little carribean island of our own like most European countries seem to have, and it seems the most logical choice.

(there's no helping those nutjob Swiss :p j/k)
good, you better not try anything fishy...or else ;)

my ideal switzerland would roughly be as it is today, except more open towards Europe and more liberal :)

oh, and no conscription :)

Okay, here goes:

India: Totalitarian 2.

Brutal dictatorship takes over, harsher than the Chinese and the Khmer Rouge combined. Stays for about a decade, using forced labor to create infrastructure projects to appease the Great Leader. All imports have heavy duties, while expatriates living in India are forced to leave. At the same time, all people of Indian origin living abroad are given an ultimatum: Return to India, or their families back home will be slain. The few that return are rounded up and forced to divulge any trade secrets they know. Using this process, the population growth is curbed, infrastructure is built, and Indian industry is developed. A popular revolution, like the one in Romania gathers speed in the 2020s, finally taking Delhi with support from the United States and other allies. Once this occurs, a multiparty republic is installed (The Indian Second Republic), with the infrastructure capacity and industries necessary to support the population.

Can i do my state, instead of my nation?

I'd say the same except for America.

So what are you going to do without an army, if Steinbrück teams up with the Bundeswehr and decides to go looking for tax evaders himself? Threaten to stop cheese and choclate production? Make public the bank records of German politicians?

I like gangleri2001's format so I'm going to use his!

Cascadia would have to get independence from the US either through negotiations, civil war or collapse.
Borders: Washington, Oregon at the very least, but would like to add Idaho, parts of Montana, California, Nevada, B.C. and Alaska. Will leave the US San Diego though and establish a 33rd Parallel in California somewhere between San Diego and LA.
Form of govt: Constitutional monarchy at first and then a slow transition into a parliamentary democracy, critically analyzing American democracy and tweaking the formula and attempting to pass reasonable and flexible laws for the present and future.
Religion: Strict separation of church and state. The government is to serve ALL Cascadians and not all Cascadian's are one religion. However holidays will be recognized for major religions or religions that have practitioners numbering more than 50 million.
Economy: Will let industries do their own thing but will nationalize industries that provide necessary products, like fish, food, water, gas, etc and will privatize if necessary but with strict safeguards so that someone playing the market doesn't ruin peoples lives.
Water: Primarily rivers, underground water sources and snow melt from the mountains, but will establish desalination plans across the country in the event that there are droughts.
Army: Based off the US Army but will also emphasize guerrilla tactics and counter-tactics as well as conventional tactics. If nuclear weapons fall in our jurisdiction, they will be dismantled with the help of whichever nuclear party wishes to aid in the dismantling. Won't have a particular nation that arms will be purchased from. Will keep destroyers and cruisers but will mothball aircraft carriers as there isn't the need to project influence yet. Compulsory 2 years service for the Home Guard but Expeditionary Forces are entirely voluntary.
Diplomacy: Fully intend to establish a good relationship with all the world but any attack against Cascadian territory will be violently met with the full intention of inflicting as many casualties on the enemy as possible, using conventional and guerrilla tactics.
America: Hope to establish good ties on par with Canada. Willing to assist in relief missions both in US territory and abroad.
Society: Attempt to instill politeness and courtesy with government service ads on all media. i.e. Mosquito's breed in stagnant water, be polite to visitors, etc. Will also establish government holidays to keep population happy and productive.

I've never heard of any cascadian independence movement.

It was more likely during the mid-late 19th century, before the Oregon Territories began applying for statehood. It was basically an envisioned republic in the American Northwest, stretching from around the North California area up into parts of British Columbia, and East to about Idaho/West Montana. It's become more of an American/Canadian inside joke nowadays than a real independence movement.

Cascadia was actually Thomas Jefferson's idea and it would have happened if the Civil War didn't happen and all secessionist ideas were ridiculed.

But someday... :king:

all secessionist ideas were ridiculed.

As a secessionist, I've never understand (and never will) how come does a country that exists thanks to secessionism ridicules secessionism.

Well I do love being an American, and can't complain too much, but we should always try to improve and be our best.

I think we should get rid of the electorial college and let the popular vote elect the President.
Washington D.C. should be able to elect a representative to congress or the Senate.
Have sterner policies on illegal immigration. I.E. more man power on the borders and crack down on bussiness hiring illegals for sub par pay. (This ain't a Serfdom slave state, you know.) Ship those who are caught out of the country, NOT give them a drivers liscense (WTH!?) They should become legal citizens first. Either do things legally like everybody else or get lost.

Buy up the bad mortgages and renegotiate them instead of giving it to the banks first. By giving the people a bailout, the banks will still get their money but the people also get a second chance to get strait on their feet, thus stimulating the economy again.

Diplomacy & Foriegn Policy - Stop thinking we have to be the police for the rest of the world. And tell Germany never to ask for anything from us since they don't know how to pull their own weight in NATO. However for allies like the UK and Canada, accept most if not all needs they might have from us.
Release the embargo from Cuba. (It's been how long now? I think it's about time.)

Tighten up on Government spending so once the economy improves we can pay down the national debt. We shouldn't be borrowing from anybody.

Create a nationwide infrostructure (Ala Eisenhower's Interstate Highway System) for alternative fueled automobilles, like Hydrogen powered, solar, and electric cars.

I think that a coalition majority government (ie...no bloc necessary) between NDP and Libs would be perfect.

NDP would keep libs from becoming blue liberals, and yet their extremism would be moderated by the liberals. Layton is a good leader but not quite PM material, so a cabinet (Min of Env?) would be good enough for him. Iggy will do well as PM, and the Bloc would join the coalition socially but hate them because of quebec.

I have a feeling (based on NDP having power and the libs not being OPPOSED to the idea) that in this situation mj would be legalized.

also, an end to the LCBO would be nice.
