Heh, speaking of emergent stories: Frostlings.
You throw them in the Arena as the Balseraphs, and if they survive, you get out a warrior with +1 ice damage. A soldier with de facto Heroic Attack and Defense I? Managed to keep him alive the whole game, and just got done updating the lil' guy to an Immortal...
EDIT: And did I mention I used him to bring the Illians to their knees?

Or my 'Needles' the flurry. Popped him from a dungeon and got him some nice melee promos as warrior first. Then apprenticed him to Gilden. It turns out he surpassed his master. He and Brigit made an awesome duo. I really needed nothing else to conquer the rest of the world. Guild of the nine supplied defenders. It was a race against time. Will I get conquest before my borders expand to domination. Auric had one city when I won.

Yes, getting the city raider and march promotions as a warrior then upgrading through the archery line to Flurry, makes for an excellent Ljosalfar strategy.
