Last year my housemates and I got very suspicious of a large number of people that were taking photos outside our house. At the time we reasoned that they were just agents from our letting agency trying to make the house look much more appealing to potential renters than it actually was by taking lots of pictures at strange angles...

A few days ago my friend discovered what had actually been going on. Google maps just keeps getting cooler (I choose to ignoring the invasion of privacy ;)). That's our TV in the window, and my Scrabble dictionary can also be made out (thrilling, I know).

Who else has their streets on Google maps?

This is our current let, nine clicks north east and one click south east of our old let above. The house next door has changed due to an arson attack last year, and we yielded conrol of one of the wheelie bins. Other than that it's the same.

Is that how they got these images? By sending trucks taking manual photographs?

I must have missed the guys taking photos of my house. :(

Google's pictures of UK go live
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7952317.stm

Google has launched the UK version of its Street View service, which allows users to browse a selection of pictures taken along city streets. Street scenes in 25 UK cities from Aberdeen to Southampton can be viewed using the service. The Netherlands version of the service also launched on Thursday, bringing the number of countries covered to nine. The imagery available comprises video taken along 22,369 miles of UK streets by customised camera cars. Google Maps users can zoom in to a given location and then drag the "Pegman" icon above the zoom bar on to a given street.

Gangs of people in our area.

Google street view is taken from specially made cameras mounted on cars. They're kinda hard to miss.

Spoiler huge pics :

Mine is there too. Looks like it was taken in the fall of 2007 as my old car in in the driveway... I am not quite willing to post my address on the public forum though.. sorry guys!

Oh! Who's yellow TR6 is that!

Some student that lived a few doors down... he didn't take very good care of it. It was pretty rusty in places.

I love how american's don't fence their borders

Then who the hell were the people taking pictures of our house?

:scared:

They were quite likely appraisers. Perhaps the owner refinanced his mortgage or needed it for insurance purposes.

Given England's paranoia about photography I'm surprised they haven't declared google an enemy of the state.

That said, google maps is pretty fun stuff. :)

england has the highest proportion of CCTV cameras per capita in the world... ironic huh?

Nah. If someone crosses our yard, we just shotgun 'em. ;)

In all fairness, some people also take the passive-aggressive way and plant a bunch of annoying prickly plants along the border as well. Take that lawn-mowing neighbor!
