Your most embarrassing civ moments

My two most embarrassing moments both involved Vassal states. I was fighting a war against Giligamish and was doing very well, I brought Napoleon in with me and had beaten the poor guy to within a few cities of surrender. I have a short attention span so I didn't notice that (Oh look a birdy) Napoleon had made him his vassal.

After a few turns of peace to regroup I re-invaded and began fighting, then all of a sudden I saw a massive stack of units outside my capital. Napoleon had come after me. I had to resign from my post as leader for life after than one because Napoleon had my number on that one...

My second one was a war with Egypt one of my closest allies was Zara and I fought beside him for years. Once again I failed to notice that he had made Egypt his Vassal, I declared was and soon found Ethiopian troops all around my cities. Luckily I was able to reload my game and avoid that stupid mistake again.

Anyone else have embarrassing stories of missteps and errors that led the death and rape of your people?

In my book it is allowed to reload your game if you make a mistake like that. I mean, if this were real-world, you wouldn't have accidentally overlooked an important military alliance.

Probably not TOO embarrassing, but one prince game I was creating a specialist economy and realised I needed civil service to farm my 2nd GP city effectively (it had very few river tiles). So I checked out the diplomacy advisor and found out that Peter was willing to trade civil service for education. I was so caught up in wanting to farm up my 2nd city that Id quite forgotten we were still racing for liberalism... I traded him education for civil service and a large lump sump but with the end result that I lost the race to him by about 2 turns

lol, easy enough mistake to make, I reload if I can't win it with the master at my back tbh, as Willowmound said, its not, um, realistic?

EDIT: One thing though, that I think stops me making this error, is that I always declare war by alt-clicking on the leader on the score board, and if they're a vassal, its shown quite clearly. I can imagine if you just move into their territory, you don't get such warning. I have clicked on the wrong name on the list and started a war with the wrong person, like getting the address wrong and sending the ambassadors head to the wrong monarch... reload.

Beyond slips such as this, I don't know I've ever been embarrassed as such.

closest was when I was very much more advanced than the japanese and landed an expeditionary force on their continent of inf, arty and tanks against grenadiers and trebuchets, captured one city, began marching on their capital and got hit with just an awesome number of crappy troops. I had to withdraw my battered troops back to the beach head and cower there until the boats could make it back with fresh troops. But since I survived, reinforced and kciked the . .. .. .. . out of the Japs after that, I wasn't too embarrassed.

I just lost a Rhyes and Fall game playing as the Aztecs because I forgot that workers cost as much as military units in upkeep. I was ONE turn away from reaching my unique victory condition of reaching the industrial age by 1850. Had I remembered the upkeep earlier, I could have deleted a bunch of workers and increased my science rate by 50% and won...

I was playing a game recently, it was early AD, and I was trying to whip a Wonder that I was building to beat the AI, who was also building it (could see via spies). I couldn't figure out why I couldn't whip it, I had enough population. Then I realized I'd never switched to Slavery. So I hit F3 to switch. That's when I realized that I built the Pyramids, and never switched to Representation. And that I had a state religion, and hadn't switched to Organized Religion.

Needless to say, I lost the Wonder race.

I turn off Vassal states. It's very annoying to be beating back Monty after he started his third war with you and suddenly he becomes a vassal to someone else and you have a forced peace.

Well, W didn't pay attention to the warnings that Iraq was Iran's vassal, did he? He got plenty of shoulder taps, even though the media reported them as back pats.

Back to real life though, I think my most embarrassing moment was when I decided to try to build every single World Wonder in Delhi in a Settler game. I was almost finished when I realized to my horror, "OMG! I built Versailles somewhere else a thousand years ago!"

While running an experiment to test out corporations I propose envirnomentalism (mainly to vote it down as there wasn't else much left to vote for) then I accidently voted for it.

It passed.

World economy crashed horrifically. Basically I had all the corps founded, and since four corps can co-exist in a city if the resources are present, etc etc my corp city had several hundred franchises feeding it $$$.

After the resolution passed I went from 100% on the slider to 0% while eeking out a gruby 39 gpt as profit. I don't want to know what happened to the AI civs, but it wasn't pretty. ugh

All the things he suggested we vote for were absolutely sensible so - STOP LAUGHING ALREDY! - yes, when the vote came up as to whether he or I should win a diplomatic victory I voted for him, out of habit, and thanks to my massive vote, he won a diplomatic victory.

Well first, where do i start?

The worst has to be getting completely smashed by a vasal (Mali ) who was lightyears ahead for some odd reason and destroyed my riflemen with tanks!

I once decided to conduct a landing operation in a France's capital, having already declared war, i got there with 20 troops, 15 or so battleships and destroyers, only to find that they had nearly 50 units in the city, oops!
