This thread is to discuss the Warlords box art. I personally don't like it. It looks more suitable for a Total War game. Civ IV is about tactics and thinking. That just shows carnage.

What are your thoughts?

I'd agree with you there. The worst thing about Civ 4 is the combat and the boxart isn't fitting for a Civ game.

I couldn't care less about the box art of the expansion because :
1- I couldn't care less about the box art of the original game to begin with, i don't buy a game to look at the box;
2- I couldn't care less about the expansion and will not buy it regardless.

Now I know why they continually redesign jacket covers to the classics.

I am buying it for what is inside the box. Also, since it is titled WARLORDS, should not the cover art depict that concept?

Makes me wonder if some of those units will make the cut (bi-plane in particular). Could be evidence of an improvemnet in air and sea combat.

I wouldn't count on it. The box to vanilla had the Sphinx and the Golden gate bridge on it. Also the bi-plane if I am not mistaken. I know at the home site for 2k the intro video shows a bi-plane going by.

In regards to the box art on warlords, I see minimal artist design in it. I understand wanting to keep the background the same, or at least have vanilla's picture incorperated into the expansion box art. However, I think that vanilla's box art was never anything spectacular in and of itself. It does resemble the look of 1 and 2 more though. BTW WTH was up with 3's design?But I think actual armies should have been shown for warlords. Or position cannons, catapults, artillery, in the places wonders should be. The only effort put towards the expansion box art is drawing these weird looking ancient armies on a clear cover and layering it over the old one.

Although my stance is as Zombie put it -

I halfally humbly agree.

I find it rather funny how my artillery gets blown away by a Longbow man.. All because he has 60% defense on his town :strength:

Even though the "Path of History" concept follows the original box and shows an interesting design concept, I don't regard it as optimal:

- the design looks cluttered (as the original)

- the design is hardly recognizable, especially as a small/low resolution image (even more as the original)

- the Warlords design may prevent sensible people from buying the game (for example as a gift)

Here a concept sketch I once did for Civ4 with the objective of an open, realistic and recognizable design (even in low resolution), transforming the fascinating Blue Marble opening menu into a similar boxart cover:
