You're not in Krasnodar any more Dorothy...

DO I SEE COMMUNIST AMERICA AND COMMUNIST CANADA?

Yes, at the end my 5 red brothers were Canada (peace vassal), America (happened naturally with the help of Defensive Alliance), UK (same story), Netherlands (used GS to erase past grievances), Japan (same as Netherlands).

Behold my victorious USSR with historical Novo-Arkhangelsk (Sitka, Alaska) ten turns before the deadline:

As you can see my most kills during the 18.5 hour game were Horse Archers, it is possible to kill them if you position your troops correctly and fortify Kiev:

Oddly enough, even after building all the possible wonders and researching some Digital Era techs, with this land and population I only got Luis 16th score :dunno:. What a joke!

Time takes a big role when it comes to define your victory score.

That's why alot of the classical civs tend to score a crap ton when they get a UHV

I did get the highest rating with America, but it was a marathon game. I had like 300 turns yet and i was very, very far Away from the Oil deadline

Ok, so i'm trying everything but these barbarian spawns man... they're harsh.

And also, i have no idea what to do after dealing with the barbarians and Mongolia. My economy is complete horsehocky, i can't go beyond 0% research because of expenses. Any tips?

What civics do you guys use? I'm currently playing on the release candidate, where Vassalage still uses food to build units, which is making me hesitant on whipping. Should i even whip?

You need to listen to the songs like this if you want to win as Russia: member of parliament made children sing: Crimea is ours, now we will return back Alaska! If our commander in chief will call us to wage the last battle -- Uncle Vova we are with you!

This is probably the best guide i ever seen in this forum
I will not reply until i make Mother Russia proud of me. I will get a UHV no matter the costs and no, Heir will not count

EDIT: Nevermind, i give up. I can handle 2 or 3 barbarians, but 4 or something 8 of them is too much for me.
Maybe i'll try Russia later but for now, i dont think so. I'll do other Civs.

Hey everyone,

Just downloaded 1.15. Excited like a child who can't bear even touching his new toy for fear of breaking it, just admiring it by looking at it from afar.

First of all, a big, big, very big, as big as it gets kudos and hugs to everyone who labored for its creation.

Russia... The impossible to deal with "behemoth that spans timezones" as a friend has aptly put it. The immense joy of seeing the title "United Socialist States of America"... What an amazing, epic game it is... It was a massive challenge in 1.14, we'll be seeing about it in 1.15.

After reading through this great and hilarious thread, just wanted to add my starting approach (from 1.14 version and get some feedback if anyone may care to give.

I built Moscow, Caricyn, and the St. Petersburg-Kiev line with the first available settlers. To get the western front solidified at the beginning is important. Every city whips a settler and a worker firsthand asap to cover as much area as possible as soon as possible. In the beginning, Barb routes (only Kiev and Caricyn (used to) get hit only from south) are mostly predictable, so defending is manageable, given some extra bit of luck is on your side. Plus, if you found Kiev south of its original position, those barbs mostly charge down south to the greener pastures of Byzantine Empire.

one tiny edit: Kiev is far too important to rely on luck, so instead of the settler, i did whip a wall there at first to get it firmly fortified and then a worker. A more secure city in the north can build the extra settler needed.

Once you reach 8 cities, then just step on the gas, rest of the strategy is up to the player to direct.

Lastly, this was all in ver. 1.14, Emperor difficulty.

Peace&Cheers,

H.

Good news: Successfully managed to actually be decent on a Russia game. Even managed to do the first UHV with ease while being on par with science.

Bad News: I have no FLIPPING IDEA on how to make Communist friends.

Espionage to switch them, and sharing technology to make them love you ("You've shared your technological advances with us").

This.... took me a full day of nonstop DoC.
Was it worth? Hell yeah it was, i was craving for this since i started this darn mod.

Not all is roses. This session took 1/3 of my sanity with it.

All is roses.
The game took all my sanity long ago, for the better

Looks like a fairly stable world. I see France was conquered. Pretty empty Australia. Nobody in India.

OH, do you wanna know why? Because Germany conquered EVERYTHING, making everybody else collapse to Core.
Then THEY collapsed a bit before me winning, which resulted in the biggest respawn i've seen. From Netherlands to Mongolia.

EDIT: Oh yeah, India. That was UK's possession. They lost due to instabillity.

Hello all

Returning to this thread as an enthusiastic convert to v1.16!

I have a question - how do people manage the economic transition following the expansion to Siberia? I find that once I plant my 7 cities, my economy tanks and I have no resources left for science or espionage, so I have to desperately develop my economy to even get to 10% research. I'm too scared to try to conquer any of my neighbours because I can barely produce enough to make up for the low tech level of my units, and it's a race to build enough workers to complete my expansion to the Pacific whilst simultaneously developing the core.

I am also prioritising farms over cottages around Moscow because I want a big productive city, so I know that isn't helping my economy, but I need the reliable production.

For what it's worth, my opening play is to build Moscow and Caricyn, link up the Iron and then spam Crossbowmen (CBM) in Moscow and Lancers in Caricyn. My attempts to build in the west have resulted on DoWs from the Euros (Poland, France and the Vikings at the same time!) and so I only expand to more than 2 cities once I've got at least 2 CBM per city. I know it sounds cautious but it also feels appropriate - just because I have the settlers doesn't mean I have can defend them.

In the early mid-game, I guess Russia needs trade routes, so I see this as an in-game driver of the Siberian Expansion, especially when the Euros are hostile.

Shout out again to Leoreth for making this so realistic - I do feel massively poor, underdeveloped and insecure for such a long time when playing as Russia!

Thanks in advance for your advice!

1) I am building Moscow, Saratov, Novgorod and Tver.
2) Change the Civic to the conquest.
3) We are in contact with Byzantium, changing feudalism a couple of technologies.
4) Rush skirmshiper in Moscow, monuments in all other cities.
5) The capture of Kiev, Moscow builds archers, the rest of the city one worker.
6) One horse archer goes to Turkmenistan. Change our technologies: get engineering + something else.
7) Build a lot of workers (9-12).
8) Build barracks in Moscow, Saratov, Kiev and Tver. Library+Marketplace in Novgorod.
9) Technologies: fortification => commune.
10) In each city, leave 3 crossbow.
11) Before the Mongol invasion, we should have about 12-15 longbowmen in 3 stack (or ten Lancers, at least!)
12) The Mongol attack is easier to beat off on its own turn (spy\explorer to help).
13) After turning to the orthodox, change the Civic to monasticism. Novgorod rush GP (scientists and merchants).
14) Colonization of Siberia only after the transition to the Renaissance!
15) Cities of Siberia: Tyumen, Surgut, Norilsk, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Ulan-Ude, Angarsk (Irkutsk). In my opinion these are the best spots. +Jakutsk, Blagoveshensk. Pacifc port - Khabarovsk.
16) In the seventeenth century, accelerate production (despotism) in all cities. After that, on the same turn, change the Civic to the monarchy. Build jails everywhere (extraproduction).
17) Spy on Prussia or England, and steal technology.
18) Further easier :)
Thanks google translate.

Playing as Russia is one of the best and most interesting game.
Barbarian horses in the very beginning, siege of Kiev, conquest of Kazan, Mongolian invasion, settlements in Siberia, the big research to railroads to make the long rail path to Vladivostok (or near by), and then you can begin your game of war, espionage, diplomacy and trading.
Funny!
I'm actually playing my first game on 1.16 as Russia and i'm about 1910/1920 in the middle of WWI, declared by France to my Germanic vassals.

I also did a Russian run recently. It has to be one of the most dynamic civs that allows you to interact with features that often go unused. Instead of writing a complete strategy guide I wanted to add some options that have not been mentioned before for those struggling with the Russian early to mid game. (My runs were no normal speed. On slower speed, worker time becomes less precious so you might want to choose other options.

1) Do not expand South of Kiev, East of Moscow: In my Russian game, I found it best to ignore any area East of Moscow until Mongolia has collapsed and any area south of Moscow and Kiev until you have successfully operationalized your Siberian colonies. There are a number of reasons for this. To begin with, for your initial four settlers, Moscow, Novgorod, Petersburg and Volgoda (North of Moscow) give you four excellent cities (on the first turn I move all my units to Kiev to take it asap). Second, though you could create additional settlers, the area outside of this core area is plagued by unpredictable barbarian spawn. Settling Crimea means that your worker have an increased chance of being caught of guard and captured. Furthermore, improvements will be destroyed routinely as it is wasteful to engage barbarian when they are on the plain. One of my struggles with Russia is that you have so much land to develop. Therefore, I choose to mostly deploy my workforce North of Moscow and Kiev. Barbs will suicide on those cities leaving you a rich hearthland you can develop and exploit with. (You could argue that if you invest in additional military to fight barbs, remember that these are hammers you cannot invest elsewhere).

2) Prevent Mongol Army Spawn/Wait for Collapse/Then Expand: I only have anecdotal evidence of this and have not examined the code, however, in my game, with these city placements, the mongol armies did not in fact spawn with the mongols collapsing in 1400. When I did move a military unit east, all of a sudden my territory was filled with Mongols. I checked in the world builder and I had not actually run into any stray Mongol unit. With this strategy you can keep your economy intact and booming throughout the Mongol era. However, you do have have enough production to build an army with the potential to fight of the Mongol stacks if this is a rare occurance

3) Civics: Despotism/Citizenship -> Elective/Vassalage: My Russia play through is the only time I have ever found use for the elective civic and did I love it! I started of using despotism/citizenship to whip out basic infrastructure and give your empire a needed early economic boost. This is especially effective for Russia since you start of with five cities with lots of food that can quickly grow to size 8-11. Instead of having them work undeveloped tiles, put that population to use and use the workers to make sure there is developed land to work when the basic building are in place (I would go for libraries, markets, aqueducts and arena to begin with). You may want to switch to monarchy when despotism has had its use, but when you start to colonize Siberia, again, you face the issue of loads of undeveloped lands as you have to found a lot of cities that in their turn can grow pretty quickly, you're workers have to spend a lot of time on building roads rather than building improvements; meanwhile you're core cities keep growing too and moving to unworked plots. When you give up monarchy, give up on some extra happiness. With the correct buildings, I never lacked for happiness in my game. Elective not only gives a commerce bonus to undeveloped tiles, but also too pastures of which you have a lot. For me, a transition into Elective meant I could increase my research slider from 20% to 50% which is enough to keep pace with the main European powers and pull ahead when Russia really hits its stride when Siberia finally starts paying off (I would really like to know your experience with this. Does Elective help you increase your commercial output, or is there a more effective way of using your civics.?)

4) Svobodny/Vladivostok over Jakutsk/Khabarovsk: When planning for the Transib Railroad, I see that many advice what I shall call the Northren route, that is to settle Jatkutsk and Khabarovsk. I would advocate for the Southren route instead, settling Vladivostok and Svobodny in Manchuria. Not only is Vladivostok the actual historical terminus of the Transib, it'll also allow to establish two high production cities, whereas the Northren route leaves with cities that will always be small and a drain on your empire. Reading guides on Japan and China it has struck me that Northern manchuria often is a neglected region (I suspect because of its lack of resources), but is in fact a really rich region with lots of rivers, forests and grassland for some high production cities. They may even be a nice staging point for an Asian invasion, if decide to go nuts late game. If you really want to also settle Jakutsk you can always do that late game, when the cost will be less of a burden on your empire, though I would rather take some other juicy cities in China, Central Asia or Europe.

5) World Domination: Doing all this is, in my experience, you have the tough part behind you. You are in control of a production powerhouse that can field the best armies, grab land wherever you want, while staying ahead of the curb technologically so you can research the required techs for the railroad and the space project in time. The only real challenge is the diplomatic goal, which I am not going into. One fun activity at this point it throwing the Turks out of Southren Russia. I often let them keep Crimea till after I complete the Siberian colonisation, since it is not that great and you need all your production, but after the colonization is a nice time to simulate the Crimean war. You can also take Helsinki, Poland, Samarkand and Mongolia to follow in the footsteps of the Czar. As long as you keep an eye on stability, from 1750 onward the world is Russia's sandbox.

Love to hear your feedback. I think of myself as pretty advanced player, but there might be a lot that I still miss.

Everytime i try to play as Russia, i give up at the beggining when my units lose to a barbarian even though the odds to lose are at 3.4% chance

Everytime i try to play as Russia (mostly 1700AD) , i give up at the beggining when my units come to Paris... :undecide:

I just got through with a Russia game and maybe it was just weird luck but I found that a lot of civs would switch to communism through trade for a nominal fee. Like 300 or so gold was enough for most of them, even America. Definitely way less than the time and effort of building up my espionage. If I ever give Russia another go I could definitely save a couple turns by keeping espionage at 0% and using what I get from buildings (which ends up being a lot, actually) for more targetted things like tech theft.

Does anyone else have lots of trouble getting the 5 friendly UHV? I can be well ahead in terms of the railroad and Manhattan Project, but for some reason getting 5 yellow faces is really tough. Even with global civics and gifting techs it seems like I can't get beyond green face.
Even with vassals that's only 2/3 yellow faces, and the more vassals you have the more angry people get.

What about getting 5 vassals? You can force to surrender required quantity civs.
