I haven't had a chance to watch the livestream so maybe I understood it wrong. But I thought that when one unit dies, one zombie can spawn (after a couple of turns).
In my first game now it seems zombies come out of nowhere. I had one spot where I killed a barbarian and after 30 turns or so 4-5 zombies spawned in that area one after another. I also saw an island that had no Civ and no CS that had zombies walking on it.
I R confused.
