Zone of Control

I've noticed that once in a while when I have a unit parked on a hill or something, and an enemy walks by, my unit will take a pot shot at the enemy, taking off 1 HP.

Anyway, what exactly is the rule on this? How does it work? When does it happen? And what units can do it?

Any unit that has the "Zone of Control" flag set in the bic file can do this. They have a free attack for every time an enemy unit moves through one of the adjacent squares. However, like bombardment units they can not do anything more than get the enemy down to 1hp.

I am not sure of all units that have this ability, but they include calvery (not knights), tanks, marines, paratroopers, and mech infantry (but not regular infantry).

Edit to correct the list of units with ZOC, noting as Zouvre said knights don't have a ZOC anymore.

well, there's a ZOC flag in the editor, so you can check which units have it there. Sorry, I can't remember which have it. In theory, the ZOC is supposed to allow units to take a single shot at passing enemy units, but in practice it seems completely random as to when your units take that shot.

Knights do not - and SHOULD not. They are in reality slower moving.

Check the Editor on all this. Some of it is really weird. I think Mounted Warriors did not have a ZOC, but likely should.

the main pourpose of the ZONE OF CONTROL is that their movements are affected if they walk through an enemy territoy, for example, if a modern tank move through an enemy territory road, then the modern army will move 3 squares instead 9, the enemy railroads or enemy roads dont work on units that have ZONE OF CONTROL.

No you never benefit from the enemy's roads and railroads irregardless of zone of control. The Zone of Control strictly refers to the pot shots the units take at opposing forces walking by them. And yes fortresses give zone of controls to those in them.

Do you mean "regardless?" or are you one heady intellectual that thinks it is his great commission to make his writing as uninderstandablely as possible? I don't know. This conversation is just getting too undisinflammable for me.

It would be great if opposing CIVs with whom you are not at war and do not have a ROP agreement were prevented from moving their units into the 8 squares around your unit with ZOC. This would actually give fortresses some use in the game: since fortresses give ZOC to units stationed in them, you could set up a few fortresses along your border and prevent those pesky AI settlers from invading your land. With the 8 square ZOC you'd need many fewer units to police your border than the current method of lining up individual units.
