Huitzilopochtli is the Aztec god of the sun, war, and the city of Tenochtitlan. According to myth, the god (whose names translates to "Hummingbird of the South") was the one responsible for guiding the Mexica to the spot where Tenochtitlan was founded. He is also said to be locked in constant war with his brothers and sisters, the moon and stars. Each sunrise is thought to signify his victory over the forces of darkness.
