[BtS] Civ of the Week: Hausa 2016-10-05

The Hausa will also be included in my next version of World of Legends, so count this as a preview!

THIS WEEKS' CIV:
THE HAUSA

What is Civ of the Week?

Civ of the Week is a “project” aiming at bringing you a new, fresh, exotic, and most of all, random, civ every 1-2 weeks, from all corners of the globe, from the Vietnamese to the Mittanni to the Iraqis.
Each civilization features full civilopedia text entires, 1-2 leaders with slightly more unique attitudes (they're not simply a copy of another leader), a UU, a UB, audio, and full graphics.

The purpose of Civ of the Week, then, is two-fold:

1. To bring you random civs that would probably not have been chosen as civilizations first of all, and to provide a new, more exotic, more interesting experience in choosing civilizations.

2. To promote more knowledge of lesser-known peoples, cultures, and histories.

Otherwise, then, enjoy!

Statistics and Information for the Hausa:

Description: The Hausa are a large and affluent ethnicity living in West Africa, mainly in northern Nigeria. They are one of the largest ethnic groups in all West Africa. Originally from the east, in Sudan, they had over centuries migrated in modern-day northern Nigeria by the middle of the 1st millennium CE. Several city-states and chiefdoms were set up, and by the turn of the millennium, the Hausa were becoming an important political and economic power in the region.

By around 1200 CE, the Hausa leaders converted to Islam, and the Hausa region was fully integrated into the lucrative trans-Saharan trade. Because of their strategic location in between the savannah states of Mali, Kanem-Bornu, etc. and between the tribes of the jungles to the south, such as the Yoruba or Benin, the Hausa became one of the most economically influential in the region, competing with the more well-known Mali and Kanem-Bornu in the markets.

Even when the northern kingdoms such as Mali and Songhai fell, the Hausa still survived. However, one weakness that had always remained with the Hausa was that their various cities and chiefdoms were always divided. This was to change with the coming of Usman dan Fodio, an Islamic scholar from the Fula tribe. Although the Fula were not the same peoples as the Hausa, they were quite influenced and even assimilated into the Hausa culture anyways, similarly to the Macedonians in Ancient Greek and the Cantonese in China.

Usman dan Fodio, believing that the Hausa rulers had become corrupt, and that they also were not adhering strictly enough to the precepts of Islam, began what is known as the Fulani Jihad around the turn of the 19th century. The Jihad did more than restore a stronger religious prescence in the Hausa city-states. It united the Hausa lands for the first time in history, and even expanded the political power of the Hausa into neighborhooding regions. The state that Usman dan Fodio founded would be known as the Sokoto Caliphate, and for a hundred years, up until the turn of the 20th century, when it would be conquered by European powers, it would dominate West Africa.

The Hausa today have a powerful prescence in Nigeria. Hausa culture, especially music, has influenced that of other West African cultures and of modern Nigerian music. The Hausa language is one of the most common languages in the region, and used to some degree as a Lingua Franca. The Hausa are likely to remain a strong entity in the region for years to come.
