William the Conqueror
I present William the Conqueror. Yes, I know there have been a few Williams made in the past, but I thought I'd make my own anyways, as he's one of my favorite English kings. Feel free to use him as another English leader (I hate the game's lack of medieval leaders). Anyhow, again, if you like this LH, I strongly encourage as another leader - he'd do well as any generic medieval English king, or, for that matter, any generic medieval Western or Central European king. A button has been included, as always.
A little background, for those who don't know: William the Conqueror was the bastard son of Robert I, Duke of Normandy, a descendant of of the Viking leader Rollo. Having inherited the Duchy at a young age, William had to fight off both internal rebellions and external invasions. However, he succeeded in defeating his enemies despite his young age (late teens, early twenties). Years later, William would contest the English throne with two other men, Harold Godwinson of England and Harold III of Norway. As Harold III defeated by Harold Godwinson, William sailed across the English channel with his army; he and Harold Godwinson met at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. William won, and he became King William I of England. He helped improve the political, economical, and social organization of England. He is also important in English - and world - history for introducing French culture into England. This is why, for example, English has a whole slew of words borrowed from French and Latin. He ruled happily for a number of years until his wife, Matilda, died in 1083. He had been entirely faithful and loving towards her for his entire life, and her death caused a great shift in personality for the king. The previously reasonable man turned much more tyrannical in his rule. He died in 1087. A towering and tall man, even by modern standards (almost six feet), he was a faithful husband, a capable soldier, a wise leader, and an important figure in world history.
