The Swedish Karoliner during the Great Northern War were renown throughout Europe for their efficiency in war; they were crack troops who favoured the fierce bayonet charge.
The Swedish king Karl XII made use of his excellent troops to defeat a whole range of nations that were allied against Sweden and he marched his armies all over Eastern Europe. Finally he took his troops deep into Russia in a vain attempt to conquer the east once and for all, but was finally defeated by Peter the Great at Poltava.
