Arab Middle Age Unit Pack (Abbasids) 2016-10-05

This pack covers a large period of time from the start of the caliphate in 750 to the death of the last Abbasid caliph in 1258 and a rather large area, including modern Iraq, Syria, the Levant and of course parts of Arabia. It is very historically accurate, however, it is rather generic and includes a lot of units which could be used for a number of things.
The pack can be divided into two two parts, the "Golden Age of the Abbasids" (750-930s) and the "Later Years of the Abbasids" (930s-1258).

Golden Age of the Abbasids

Black is the dynastic color of the Abbasids and many of the troops in their employment wore their colors.

Abbasid Abna Infantry (Archer)
Abbasid Abna Infantry (Pikeman)
Abbasid Abna Infantry (Swordsman)

These three soldiers represent the Abna infantry under the service of the Caliph and thus they are richly armored and clothed. The swordsman sports a black robed following the description of the Chinese, but they all sport black turbans showing their allegiance.

Abbasid Spearman
Abbasid Cavalry (Early Ghulam)
Abbasid Cavalry
Abbasid Maceman
Abbasid Axeman (Black Shirt)

These last five units represent common troops under the employment of the Abbasid caliphate and their commanders.

Later Years of the Abbasids

Abbasid Bowman
Abbasid Crossbowman
Abbasid Spearman (Common)
Abbasid Heavy Footman
Abbasid Syrian Cavalryman
Abbasid Cavalry (Hammer)
Abbasid Heavy Cavalry

These last units represent middle eastern troops during the later years of the Abbasid Caliphs. After the bankruptcy of the Caliphates during the 930s the middle east entered a period of decentralization as most of the governors began to only pay lip service to the Caliph and rule as they saw fit. Because of this, the Caliphate began to occupy a more ceremonial role in middle eastern politics as it's practical political did not reach outside of Baghdad and a few of the surrounding territories. These troops represent native middle eastern soldiers under the service of the numerous governors during this period as well the later Turkish Atabegs. Could also be useful for Crusader scenarios.

Abbasid Maceman (Harafisha)
Abbasid Spearman (Harafisha)
Abbasid Axeman (Harafisha)

These three units were created to represent the Harafisha or rabble. Camp followers/workers, vagabonds, looters, poor levies, and so on. The term Harafisha is a generic term applied to any poor camp follower including just people who worked with the baggage train. Could be used for any Islamic levy/bandit/peasant unit.
