Hōryū-ji
One year ago today, at this exact point in time, a magnitude 9.0 Earthquake struck off the Eastern coast of Japan. Devastating in itself, this earthquake resulted in a powerful Tsunami in which over 20,000 people lost their lives. In commemoration of this event, we have chosen to release a Japanese wonder today. Located in the Nara Prefecture of Japan, Hōryū-ji is a large temple complex dating to 607 CE. Much of the original temple is believed to have been destroyed in a fire in 670 CE, with the current complex believed to be a restoration, which incorporates aspects of both Korean and Chinese architecture. The five-tiered pagoda is one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings on Earth, dating to the sixth century CE, and is rumoured to have bone fragments of Buddha at the base.
