HMS Äran was built of riveted steel and was 89.7 meters long and 15.02 meters wide. Machinery consisted of two 3-cylinder triple-expansion steam engines were steam from eight coal-fired boilers. This machinery gave an output of 5,500 horsepower, which spread over two propellers resulted in a maximum speed of 16.5 knots. The ship's main armament consisted of two 21 centimetre guns m/98B was in his tower located on the front and rear deck. Secondary Artillery consisted of six 15.2-inch guns m/98 . A major difference from previous ironclad classes was that they were set in their own towers, instead of the casemates. Furthermore, there were six 57 mm cannons m/89B and two torpedo tubes located below the water line for 457 mm torpedoes. The two steam launches which accompanied was armed with was its 37 mm cannon m/98B.
