The five Tarawa-class amphibious assault ships were built during the 1970s for the U.S. Navy to serve as the centerpiece of Amphibious Ready Groups. These Landing Helicopter Assault (LHA) ships can carry a mix of CH-46, CH-53, AH-1, and UH-1 helos, as well as Marine Harriers. The ships can also carry up to 1,700 marines, and have a rear well deck for launching amphibs or an LCAC hovercraft. All but one have now been retired and replaced by the later Wasp class.
