Britain created during the Crimean War (1853-1856) a fleet of several hundred steam gunboats and used them to attack the surrounded Russian fortifications of Bomarsund, Sweaborg and Aland Islands. They were so successful that the Russian defenders had to surrender. The Kingdom of Prussia followed the example in the years 1859-1861, although not in such large numbers, but at least 23 gunboats were built. Eight gunboats of the 1st class were built: Basilisk, Blitz, Chameleon (Kamäleon), Comet, Cyclop, dolphin, dragon, meteor, built in the Gdansk Shipyard.
