SGOTM 15 - Unusual Suspects

Neil hates us. Our first, and very close, neighbor, is Tokugawa of the Japanese, whose scout appears to our southeast on turn 4 aka 3840 BC.

Spoiler :

This is the map so far. No real surprises. There is ocean to the south.

Spoiler :

Here are the demo screens that kcd wanted. We are #1 in manufactured goods, and we were #5 in land area, but now it appears the enemy have settled new cities, and we are #10 in land area again. edit - no, they did not found new cities, instead they all got cultural border pops.

Spoiler :

I went ahead and uploaded the official save so people could look at it, and also in case we don't have another green light before I leave town. If we do come to consensus today or Monday, I'd like to finish out the turn set.

Here is your Session Turn Log from 4000 BC to 3840 BC:

Drona hasn't moved yet. Should we continue the clockwise scouting, exploring the marble city site? Or should we divert to explore in the direction of Tokugawa?

My initial preference is to continue exploring marble, spiraling in the clockwise direction.

edit: fixed my confusion about clockwise and counterclockwise

Yeah, I'd vote for continuing scouting toward the marble site (I think that's clockwise ). We definitely need to see if there are any city sites we want to prioritize with Tokugawa so close.

And with Tokugawa so close, I'd say this definitely puts SH off the table, even with the stone start, in favor of REX.

I would vote for focusing our espionage points on Tokugawa for now, given how close he is (at most, his scout started 10 tiles to the east of it's position in the screen shot).

The religion makes it hard to tell if any of our opponents are Creative. The rival with the Buddhist shrine would get +11 :culture:/turn (+2 :culture: from the palace, +5 :culture: from the holy city, and +4 :culture: from the shrine). You can see their cap got it's border pop already on turn 1 (21000 land area). At least one of our opponents has a coastal capital (6000 land area on turn 1).

Edit:
Interesting that it's Tokugawa of the Japanese, considering the Unrestricted Leaders setting.

I was thinking the same thing.

One other random thought: Might The Great Wall be of use if we use the Great Spy to make the AI switch religions? (Edit: To be clear, I'd still favor REX over wonder building at this point.)

Wouldn't there also be +5 :culture: from having the holy city in the capital?

Yes, that's correct. I knew I'd miss a modifier. Does that replace the +1 :culture: from having the religion in the city, or is it additive with that bonus?

Warrior 1 sh continue clockwise / SW / W
Warrior 2 sh to NE then E then SE - let's check out Tokugawa's land and see where we need to REX. Looks like coast or lake to NE just over the mtn.
Warrior 3 sh to NE, then counter clockwise.

green from me.

I checked it in a test game. The +5 :culture: bonus from a holy city, does indeed replace the +1 culture from having the religion. So a holy city capital with a shrine would get +11 :culture:.

Will not be at a computer until later to take a closer look. But are you working the river grass for the research?
Edit: looks like the plan called for the forest. Check to see if the river tile gets poly sooner.

Working the forest gets us to pop 2 on the same turn that warrior 2 completes, letting us start the worker on the turn we increase population. Working the river grass does not improve the polytheism date. At any rate, we are only working the forest one more turn. We start working either floodplain or corn (3F1C) after cultural expansion on turn 5.

A random thought, could we use the espionage point balance to see if Toku (or anyone else we may meet) has contact with other civs? Basically if he spends all his EP's on us he doesn't have any other contacts. If we get only one EP/turn he's probably got at least 3 more civs to waste his points on (I believe a PermAlly can't get any points on the other ally though).
I often use this to get an estimate on how many contacts an AI civ has in the early game when only the palace produces EP's.

I'd say continue on the discussed path. Unless you come across a lone worker in the wilderness;) (I'd advise caution if planning to steal a worker but what do I know:) )

Looks like we have votes in favor of continuing on the original plan by High King, Trystero, Deckhand, SteelHorse, and, of course, me. I will set our espionage priority on Tokugawa.

Is that good enough, or should I wait for a green light from Xc?

Sorry Chris, I got involved in a "little" home improvement project. Yes, please continue with The Plan. And then make us one of your excellent test games so we can try out various options for the week you're gone. ;)

We are Hindu
Spoiler :

We also appear to be semi-isolated with only Tokugawa for a friend. However, there is land reachable by galley to the West and South. We definitely have some artificial mountain range building going on.

Spoiler :

When I saw the mountain range, I decided to send the third warrior (Guru) southeast, so we have two warriors headed for Tokugawa. Lotus, our #2 warrior, killed two lions, promoted to Woodsman I, and has 2 turns left to heal. Guru, our warrior #3, killed one lion, and has 2 turns left to heal. Drona, our warrior #1, is exploring toward the northwest passage.

Spoiler :

A few more random screenshots. I have save files from every turn, so if anyone wants to see demographics or anything else, let me know. The turns were uneventful, aside from the lion killing.

Spoiler :

Unfortunately, I hit exit before I saved, so I had to restart turn 3440BC from the autosave and move the Drona warrior again. There weren't any other changes and I've notified Alan.

Here is the official save file. My turn set is done. This is an official handoff.

I hope to update the test game files tonight when I get back from dinner with family. If not, I'll do it on Monday evening.

Random thoughts and notes.

There's a living lion hanging out near out southwest border near the bananas.

The grassland gems are looking mighty nice, but a city to choke Tokugawa is probably a higher priority. We can't let Toku get the gold. The cows are unfortunately wasted, until we pick them up from Bollywood culture expansion. Someone needs to dotmap for us.

With this map, I believe The Oracle needs to be a priority. How will we get it? I think we should forget Stonehenge and The Great Wall.

A coastal city and exploring workboats would also be nice.

There are trees in the mountains.

I would let both warriors heal before sending them farther toward Tokugawa.
