CiV.1.DOS. | Scenario / Savegame: EARTH 2

akaneda, you are d*** lucky. Few of my games have such luck. Maybe on chieftain where I have a huge advantage over barbarians and AI cities sometimes undefended. I never saw an undefended city on Prince level.

The Americans on my planet had about 9 cities in 1AD when I met them. 4 of them were > 10. Their biggest city was New York, pop 17 and they had 6 phalanxes fortified. Shouldn't they be easy to kill? No. I lost ~15 knights, cannons, and finally armor attacking. Never killed a single phalanx! All were veteran with city walls and fortified, but still couldn't beat them with armor.

Okay, so you are just way better than me. And d*** lucky!

How do you play to 1750AD for largest population when you win the game earlier? I wasn't paying attention and conquered the world and it ended my game, kicked me to dos, and didn't let me save or continue. Now I have to go back and re-play the last several dozen turns...about two hours of playing. Probably about 200 years.

I can see this is going to get boring, though. Even in the last 5 turns it was really tedious building settlers, terrain improvements, cities, and cleaning pollution. When you have that many cities it takes minutes for each turn! I like CivDOS over later Civs because the turns are short and the game is fast paced. Let's not do another population game unless we end it early so that people have to deal with the computer civs.

Goldberg, nice game. Had lots of fun. I think you designed the world for large growth. The amount of bonuses like game, horse, good grassland, gem, gold, coal, and especially oasis was far more than I've ever seen in Civ. It was like Civ heaven. It made Prince much easier for me. I almost feel ready to go back to playing King.... Thanks for sharing your map with us.

NO, not 'LUCKY' -
that's 100% SAVEGAME cheat.

you can have 'luck' up to 3 times ... but the next 2 cities raiding actions you'll lose 10 armors and so on, if you don't savegame, get out and return etc.
PRiNCE for sure is easier as KiNG in this case -
but i remember those days (years ago) i really had a hard time with zulus at PRiNCE (10s of knights and my little cities of "3" get smashed one by one - i really had NO CHANCE at a certain stage... ...and i did savegame cheat like crazy and couldn't stop the invasion! :(

luck is not what happened to me in that game, and i swear i used no savecheat in any fight. why should i when i have 20 chariots land on america and 2 cities of size 3 and 2 of size 1? hey guys belief me, then i realy do not need to play that game!!!

i "visited" the americans in 2500BC or stuff, so maybe thats the reason why to finish them that easy ( 4 crap units vs 20 chariots)?

and yes my turns take 10 to 15 minutes. im in 80AD at the moment and handling 118 settlers and 81 cities, i finished irrigating,.... in complete europe, america, where the mongols had been and half of africa, without settlercheat :nono:!!

to me there is no luck, no cheating and no magic anyhow related to that results:cringe:

You forget the power of early invasion. Obviously akaneda has perfected that art. The earlier you strike the less well defended the ai cities will be. And when the ai cities are poorly defended you don’t need much luck to beat them with minimal losses to your own troops.

I think beating 3 militia in a row with horsemen is a bit unlikely, but unlikely events happen frequently in civ1 so there is nothing suspicious about that. The rest of the conquest seems totally believable too. When he used chariots and catapults against militia and a few phalanxes he shouldn’t loose many units. I see no reason not to trust akaneda’s words. Why can’t we all just trust each other?

Pika, when akaneda says he didn't savegame cheat, I will accept that. Until he said that I was sure he cheated. I also was trying to defeat phalanx defenders in my game but I lost a battleship, an armor, and nearly 50 knights/catapults/cannons. If I could have such bad luck, I find it extremely unlikely that anyone could have such good luck that they only lose 3 units when using such low rated units as chariots and horsemen.

BTW, I will get a second chance to play the game tomorrow. I have a long airline flight so I will get two hours of CivDOS play...maybe more, depending on how my laptop lasts and how many stops the plane is making. I hope to be finished with the game by the time I fly back in a week.

ok right in time i finally finished my game!!
i didnt play till 1750, because i only saw a small chance for any further growing of my population and by the way i became a bit blurred in my head :crazyeye: !!

here are my saves (all of them!! if anybody wishes) but not renamed!!:mischief:

View attachment all saves.zip

just hit the button for the next turn

i finished in 1530AD
with 40.000 settlers land on alpha centauri
327 million people on earth2
a score of 3977
and 238%

and best of all i found a bug!!
when the population raises beyond 330 million it turns to negativ numbers, another reason why i stopped playing.

and yes i got a save for that:

View attachment nice bug.zip

no one beliefs me how glad im that i finally finished!!:hammer2:

Ahhh! The joy of 16 bit math. Looks like you have gone in to the forbidden zone. It is nice that the math worked rather than an overflow error.

Wow very cool, I didn't know that

Congratulations akaneda! :goodjob: That was very impressing. You really took this game to the limit. And, nice bug you discovered

So, Goldberg, when is the deadline for this game? Since a new GOTM has been released already I think this one should be closed soon. When do we get the final results?

I will be done with this game in a few days (by Wednesday). I can see my population has been skyrocketting every turn since I defeated the rest of the civs.

Honestly, I don't see any point to ever having another population game goal considering that there is a bug. I'm also supremely bored! I beat the game a week ago and I'm still playing every day for a few hours trying to get to 1750AD. I am not going nuts with a zillion settlers, even though that would help my score a lot. I am limiting myself to 15-20 settlers because the game takes sooo long. Each turn is running 10-15 minutes as I handle all the city improvements in my growing empire.

1. while testing this game at empereor i never thought or care about what will happen at prince level.
2. the thing was used in a way never supposed too.
3. the rules did change too because people did discuss them over & over while playing.
4. we have the akaneda population result nobody can beat anyway because we see now new game limitations.
5. i lost overview where, who, when did post a savegame (or is there just akaneda who did correctly, i don't know... sorry)

so i think we need a
"just-1-post-results-thread"
with the attached / link to a savegame / package (ALL AUTOSAVES)
something like http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=159418
Code:
Entries will consists of a ZIP-file with ALL AUTO SAVE GAMES.
If 3000bc & 2000bc may be overwritten
then rename them Civil2.* and Civil3.*.

The move before your last move will be saved as civil0.*.
Include your Replay.txt, your year and score.

Rules:

    * Use version 5. No version 1 (i.e. 474.01 or 475.01)
upgrade to version 5
    * No use of other programs (map viewers, Editors, etc...)
    * Overuse of settler cheat - if you use it so state it.
(too much rules would mess up the whole thing for other interested people who are not willing/ready to discuss-rules-to-death here).

and yes - sorry - i didn't expect that people will be that bored with the settler blues before 1750 AD so no 'population game' ever again from my side.

maybe a goal discussion would help - i don't know?

Oh! I forgot.. I'll get mine in tonight..

I still have about an hour left in the game, I'm about to have dinner and say goodbye to my family, and get on a plane tomorrow morning. So I'll finish the game on the plane tomorrow and post my results either Tuesday night or Wednesday at work. I'm doing good and will definitely be done tomorrow. I can't believe how long it is taking! An hour or two every day for the last week and I've gotten from 1250AD (where I defeated everyone on the planet) to 1700AD. Like I said, just an hour to go!

Gah, homework and such is making me say in two nights time.

Alex has finished the game. It took about 12 hours to defeat all the civs, but another 24 hours to go through all the population growth. Man that was painful! I've never spent so much time on one CivDOS game. But I did learn a lot about CivDOS in the process.

It seems that no matter how much food you produce, once you reach the full granary it takes another turn to grow a population point. I did not know there was an extra turn between filling the food to the limit and the growth.

I never knew about cheats so after I beat all the civs, I tried out the waterbridge and settler cheats to see what they do. Waterbridge (roads/railroads over water) cannot be used to move over water. It only helps the trade value of the square (and maybe food production on a fish but I didn't try that). Settler cheat lets you do almost anything in one turn, but it seems that any time you use the settler cheat, the settler becomes dormant for the next turn. Nothing will wake him up and so basically everything you do with a settler cheat takes 2 turns (one to build and one to rest). I didn't test the other cheats and I didn't use these extensively as you can see in my save game. I just wanted to find out what people were talking about.

Population = 44,140,000, Year = 1750AD

Dack (did not follow rules but a good, fast conquest):
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpo...3&postcount=46
Population = 1,740,000, Year = 1160BC

Irish Caesar:

Population = 22,640,000, Year = 1750AD (taken from replay.txt)

akaneda:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpo...8&postcount=70
Population > 327,670,000, Year = 1750AD (found a bug in the game making an exact score impossible)

Alex (see attachment on this post):
Population = 80,840,000, Year = 1750AD (taken from save game, population went up during final year by joining settlers into existing towns)

Trada (forfeit):
Lost the save game before posting.

Where's Trada? He should have finished over the weekend even if he got stuck with homework during the week.
