Van01 - A Newbie Hope

OK, finishing this up now, and saving every turn. We had Freddie offer us Gold for Wines in 1690 and I accepted.
1695AD
We get this Random event, which is alright I guess, not that we need the culture in Carthage so I take the 1st option which doesn't require a gold outlay.

Battle for St Petes, Redux
This time 2 of our Trebs withdraw, 2 are killed
Our Muskets take out LB (x2), and an Axe, and Mace (x2) but dies taking out a Knight
Knights kill a Pike and a Longbow
We lose Knights on a Mace and Knight (both with 80% win chance)
Maces kill a Knight x2 and then a Mace and St Petes falls again

1700AD -FINALLY!!!
Mayapan Knight->Musket
Whip the Taj in Carthage

And thats all, stack is healing up in St. Petes. Next player should be able to get the last two Russian cities in the North. I'm thinking Heroic Epic in Utica. Enjoy, and sorry for all of the delays.

The Save

Roster check:

1. Pigswill - On Deck
2. Vanor -
3. Splime -
4. Dawn -
5. glenmetz - Just played
6. stuge - up (but past the 24 hour "got it" mark)

It seems the save has disappeared! Maybe it was affected by the upload hacker. Hopefully glenmetz has got the original on his HDD, probably best to post it via 'manage attachments' (now with a 60Gb limit!).

Looking good. Maybe a few more seige needed? Got plenty of maces and muskets. It would be an idea to lay off the whip and let our established cities grow again.

Taj is due next turn :goodjob: so it could be time to think about a civics change. We've got OBs so free market is worth considering (tho I didn't check if AIs are running mercantilism which would render FM pretty pointless atm and we'd be better to run mercantilism ourselves). Probably keep slavery to whip the basics in our newly captured cities. Do we want to keep theocracy? Its an expensive tech amd we don't need many more units. If we need infrastructure then OR would be good though FR is good for research and foreign relations.

Cat's willing to talk peace but not yet ready to capitulate. Maybe polish off her last two northern cities and then see if she'll reconsider.

I got kind of whip happy there, I guess my seedy underbelly was showing. :whipped:

Definitely agree on needing more siege weapons. I think we are down to 4-5 Trebs, it took 3 turns of bombardment to take the last city. Luckily Cathy is in such bad shape that she couldn't attack our stack at all.

Lets take out those last 2 northern cities and see if she'll capitulate then. If not, oh well, wipe her out.

Oh, lookie, I'm up. Sorry for being a little slow but I've got it now.

We have a vassal:

I captured Yakutsk and Yaroslavl with a few losses and Cathy had the good sense to bend before us. She offered us the crappy city of Bryansk. Instead I made her adopt mercantilism and OR to match us.

This was the GA switch. Slavery will still serve us for some time, I suppose.

Dealings with Joao and Freddie:

Build them observatories.

Military tradition and chemistry were researched. Constitution is currently on the line. I reckon that representation and later universal suffrage and emancipation will serve us good. We've been going pretty long with a small empire and now inflation is setting in and seriously hurting our economy.

Don't crack the whip. Our commerce cities are on emphazise food. We're now friendly with both Freddie and Joao, so don't build more troops. Our production cities can focus on jewish and confucian missionaries in order to help our finances. BTW, I really want to kill Pacal violently for building the Temple of Solomon when hinduism was becoming a dominant religion. Damn moron.

A Great artist was born in Mutal, and he settled in his home city. We'll soon have three hindu temples, so we can build the hindu catehdral whateveritsnameis in Mutal.

There be Aztecs:

They share the continent with Greece, according to a map I mooched from Joao.

To end on a cheery note, we're building privateers. Time for some merry pirating mischief.

Got it.

Had a look. Reduced culture slider to 0, breaking even at 60% research. Once our cities start growing the economy should improve. Missionaries for our 3 :)goodjob: ) shrine religions will help. I guess we'll be looking to build Wall Street in Mutal. Amazingly enough despite our naff research rate and small cities we have a tech lead  .

Time for some consolidation and growth.

Oh god I'm dumb. Here I was wondering why our economy sucks so bad, when the culture slider is at 30%.

(Smashes head on keyboard repeatedly.)

I've played four turns so far. Met Monte, Shaka and Pericles. Pericles is Shaka's vassal. They're all buddhist. They're all fairly behind on tech. Got OB with Shaka and Pericles and made some deals.

I've noticed we don't have a GP Farm. Looking through I notice we haven't built a single national wonder! HE and WP for military city, NE for GP Farm, OU (needs 3 more unis), IW (when we get to steel). Where to put them all?

Some quick thoughts/observations after looking at the save.
- Iron Working locations could be Mayapan or Hippo. Both have good food to support the mines.
- FP built in Moscow(once the courthouse finishes)?
- Lot of empty space where the remains of Yekatsinburg sit. Maybe our own city 1 NW of that spot? Lose a lot to the mountains, but claim that space for our own.
- Also, need to ensure that Cathy doesn't expand across the southern edge, just to claim enough land to break free of her vassalage.

Played 15 peaceful turns up to 1750ad

At the start of the set we were producing 326 beakers at + 7gpt (60% research). By the end of the set we're producing 483 beakers at +6gp (70% research).

Lots of deals were made (and some were broken):
copper to Shaka for 7gpt
pig to Pericles for cow
marble and wine to Joao for bananas cancelled by me (yes, we have bananas)
gems to Joao for sugar
gold to Fred for wine cancelled by Fred
copper to Fred for dye
corn to Monte for 11gpt
wine to Shaka for fish
iron to Pericles for 6gpt
iron to Shaka for spices

Didn't trade any techs. Cat demanded education, I accepted coz who wants ignorant vassals. She went from annoyed to cautious.

Learned constitution, we're one turn from corporation. Maybe democracy next? Maybe a military tech? Scimeth will obselete Glib and Parthenon so that's worth bearing in mind. We have a decent tech lead.

We're a bit low on power at the moment. I built three privateers, they're heading towards Aztec lands.

We got circumnavigation bonus (in 1740! wtf!).

Couldn't find work for the workers so they're stagnating in Hippo should they be needed.

Yaroslavl has started on Forbidden Palace. A production city started on Heroic Epic. Another production city has started West Point. Carthage maybe for National Epic (will lose GPP when Glib eventually obseletes but does have spare food for specialists).

Our cities have grown nicely and our score has shot up as a result. They're still generally below health and happy caps so keep them growing. Cat founded a new city butis still fairly securely vassalised.

Overall we're reaping the fruits of our earlier military investment.

I'd go for democracy next. A switch to US/free speech/emancipation/free market/free religion is imminent at some point.

After that, we can decide how to win the game. Space/domination/conquest look like the best candidates.

And nice economic imrovement. :goodjob:

Vanor is UP!
Splime is on deck (or MIA?).
