The first number is the version. The number in the parenthesis is a changelist number. It'll be different between PC, Mac, Linux, and iOS, but should have no impact on the functionality of the game.
The current live version on Mac is 1.0.0.341 (176806). It'll show 1.2.4 in the launcher.

The game update is out, but we're waiting for the Rise and Fall IAP to show up in the store.
For what it's worth, this updates iOS from the equivalent of PC version 1.0.0.194 to 1.0.0.317

I'm usually playing on Emperor, so the slingers (and upgraded to archers) discourages early attacks. Plus, 3 archers and a Warrior is typically enough to siege a city early when needed.
