Base score is Land + FF - Tax Rate, so Adams probably has more FF or a lower tax rate. Your score was dropping as your tax rate went up.
If you toggle on the score display and mouse over your name you will see how this is calculated, unfortunately the same doesn't apply to the other leaders...
I reinstalled the game after a long break and couldn't remember how to increase the size of the maps (I prefer to play a long game on a very large map).
Fortunately I found that this excellent thread is still available.
I also have that boxed DOS version complete with full printed manual etc which I think I bought around 1995. However when I play now I use the GOG version.
It is interesting to read those initial game specs - 1 MB Ram and 5 MB hard disc space. Yes that is MB, not GB, a little different to...
I agree with you on the trading aspect of the game. Not only can you trade with Europe but all of the native tribes have their own treasury. Most 4X games seem to treat trade as an afterthought.
What are some of the better games you have played that include trading? These are a few that I can...
Unfortunately those pictures all vanished - replaced by a ransom demand from Photobucket! I have had to go through and replace them all individually (fortunately I'd saved the originals).
In this case the blue cross indicates that you have accepted that option (i.e. 'enabled' it).
In my own games I just select the Independence victory option and that does indeed mean that the only victory possible is by winning Independence.

I don't know how to do that myself but I'm sure someone can help you.
However exploring the map is easy enough to do. In my latest game I sailed north four turns before settling. I wasn't looking for sugar though, I wanted some coastal forest for timber for future shipbuilding.
Yes it is a bug. Strangely enough it was introduced with the patch, the original release did have a random start position. However I wouldn't recommend playing without the patch as it fixes many other problems.
You can of course sail north from your starting position until you find the sugar!
This is an 8 year old thread so I'm not sure how much help you will get. The official patch should be still available from multiple sites - google 'colonization patch'. Otherwise consider buying a fully patched version of the game from Good Old Games for $5.99.
Actually 1834 is quite a bit later than I usually finish. I play on a 60x96 tile map and most of my games take 40 hours+ and finish in the late 1700's.
It is always a risk when another colonial power declares independence early. I usually send an attack force to help his King so he can't reach...
That's a very well written description of your winning strategy.
For myself I prefer a long game on a very large map and have no difficulty beating a large REF.
