Why does each iteration of Civ get more & more cartoony?

Actually, I was overjoyed to see the graphics. I don't give a frack for 'realism' in a strategy game (regarding the optics, I mean), what is important is clarity. I am going to spend many, many enjoyable hours gazing at cVI screens (as with all Civ iterations there have been), and I prefer not...

Your Top 3 Battles of WWII

I've always been fascinated by the drama of the Bismarck's last cruise and sinking. Arguably one of the most powerful battleships in the world, she sank the "Mighty" Hood with just a couple of salvos, then, returning to France with relatively minor damage. after being hunted by dozens of...

Hulfgar's Modpacks - Industrial and Complete Edition

Almost certainly a stupid question.... haven't DLed any Mods in a while. I DLed the BNW version, and it shows as a single .civ5mod file. I had expected a .rar file or something similar. From the opening posts I had also assumed I would see the folders and files to make changes. What do I do...

BNW not working, can't activate it

So it's working now? Great, can't wait to get home from work then... :-) It's not the harddrive space, and I restarted steam and the computer multiple times. No, it has to be a lock due to the deadline - but I really really wish they had included a warning or an error message!

BNW not working, can't activate it

Nice to see I'm not the only one with this problem. I got my (European) version from Amazon yesterday and of course was over the moon... finally a new expansion for my addiction!! :-) I tried and tried to install it, faithfully following the instructions... Steam said, yes, I have the DLC...

Can you compare Japanese interment camps to jewish concentration camps?

Certainly you can compare them. There is a basic similarity in that large numbers of people are 'concentrated' i.e. locked up in camps according to some defined characteristic, be it racial, political, religious or some other, not for anything they may have done, as in a prison. The differences...

Political Cartoons XIII: The GOP Strikes Back

Interesting historic cartoon - how about some context? I'm guessing a British cartoon from about 1790 about the 'blessings' of the French Revolution, yes?

    Prohibition

I agree fully with this part. Prohibition showed very clearly what happens when one tries to abolish drug abuse by repressive laws. The main difference to today's War on Drugs was that the use of alcohol was more widely accepted than that of, say, heroin. That meant that far more people were...

    Downfall question

Not to contradict any of the above, but I read that the tremble in Hitler's arm became noticeable after Stauffenberg's failed assassination attempt July 20th 1944. Remember that Hitler was actually in the same room with an exploding bomb - he was very lucky to survive and it seems quite...

    Hulfgar's Modpack

I'm also having the tech tree problem - but reading the previous posts that may be fixable... I don't have the DLC's either. I second the question about the technologies fix file in the first post. Is that supposed to fix the tech tree problem? How/where is it installed? Also should...

Historical Fiction Novels You Recommend(and Alternate History if you want)

@Ricecrew: Judging by the book-list, I'm pretty sure he'd enjoy the books by Robert Conroy, see my post #82 in this thread

Historical Fiction Novels You Recommend(and Alternate History if you want)

I have read a couple - one (1945) about a new war starting between the western Allies and Russia at the end of WWII and another one (1944? I think) about the US not using their first atom bomb on Hiroshima but as a tactical weapon to facilitate the invasion of Okinawa. Reasonable premises and...
