I'm curious too. Haven't read it but i know the general idea. While I do think it might be a bit exagerated in parts, it does not seem so implausible as to say it's wrong.
We have something similar here - but only as a Pagan/Christmas tradition, nothing related to gifts.
You occasionally see these things running around the streets during x-mas time:
Typical of those pagans to get presents from goat demons.

And the Christmas lads sounds like stage name for a male stripper band bringing presents.
