Or maybe he was preaching to what should have been the choir, but turned out to be a disgruntled congregation.

Where in the World are you? What is so special about your cottage/hamlet/town/city?

New York, New York Financial capital of the world. One of the world's largest cities. Great food. Awesome nightlife. Lots of culture. People from all over the world. Music, film, art. Can't go wrong, it's a great town.

    Stonehenge when Cultural?

That's a cool strategy. I haven't tried culture flipping strategies that much, but it's something to consider.

    Stonehenge when Cultural?

Building Stonehenge right off the bat, as you suggested, has a huge opportunity cost. Oracle comes later, after your core cities have produced settlers and are ready to make buildings. I usually build the Oracle in one of my production centers, where I will later build troops. I build...

    Stonehenge when Cultural?

Excellent point. And you really want to pump up GPP, you can build the oracle as well as the temple, and you'll be producing 5 GPP, where with Stonehenge alone you're producing 2 GPP. Priesthood is a "must have" for people who want lots of Great Prophets.

    Stonehenge when Cultural?

It is extremely rare to see the oracle built pre-1500, even in emperor games. Of course, as someone mentioned, it depends on the number of civs and their characteristics. Maybe our luck has just been different, I just haven't felt the need to even worry about beelining to priesthood except on...

Combined Arms: What the Heck are they Good For?

But in the game it would lead to explorers being used as an extensive part of armies in modern times. And that would seem like an exploit.

Micromanagement is alive and well in Civ 4!

Does this apply if I'm only whipping one citizen to finish the granery? I could have sworn that whipping shortly prior to a population increase allows you to regrow one pop much more quickly than whipping shortly after a population increase. As I pointed out ealier, in my science center I...

Micromanagement is alive and well in Civ 4!

I am not as much of a fan of whipping in my science centers. Here's my reasoning: In those places all I'm building is a granery, a library, maybe a market, and a university, Oxford University, etc... I whip the granery if it's going to be finished shortly after a pop increase. But I don't...

    Stonehenge when Cultural?

True. But you really have to watch to make sure that you build the library ASAP so that your first GP is a scientist. And then you still have to worry about the second GP being a prophet. Prophets aren't bad, but I like acadamies better. I love having 2 or 3 research powerhouses. Could be...

    Stonehenge when Cultural?

You build the library so that you can use two scientists. The two scientists lead very quickly to a Great Scientist. The Great Scientist leads to an acadamy. And if you've been cottage spamming that city dominates from very early on.

    FREE RELIGION means DISASTER

My overall point is that religion is not necessarily important. I do not like to use it because there are better ways to increase happiness, and those ways have the added bonus of not causing bad relations with other civs. As for difficulty level, I do not play above emperor. I do not know...
