DoWing is not what gives you the biggest diplo hit, taking cities is. You can take just his capital and be OK. The biggest thing is to get support from other nations before DoWing. Civs that are your friends or who are already at war with your target won't care.

That got changed in BNW. For Dom victory you need to control all original capitals. You don't need to be the first one to take them, but you do need to hold them.

Why would there only be 6 - 7 tiles that would benefit from desert folklore? You've got 8 good desert tiles around your cap already (9 if you get Petra and that last flat desert becomes a good tile), and it looks like the desert upriver of your capital could be a good settling spot as well...
