    The British and for a short while, the Japanese. One town, Malacca, was conquered and used by the Portuguese and later the Dutch as a fortified outpost to control nearby trade routes though.

    No, always go for sea-going routes, even for internal trade. They're (almost?) always better than caravans.

    Usually 3 well-placed cities until I get to ideology. A 4th one sometimes for a resource I lack. Then when I start getting a lot of happiness, I will expand everyotherway - found new cities, conquests etc. Usually for resources.

    How do you like to organize your armies?

    In peace time, my forces are dispersed. Ranged in cities, melee just outside them in likely invasion corridors. Usually a few units around my capital as well. Fleet will be concentrated at likely points of enemy attacks or otherwise outside the capital as well.

    2) Did you setup trade routes to foreign cities? I find that these bring in quite a bit of gold - without them I am usually barely breaking even.
