What influences how many points a civilization gets each turn?

I'm very new to Civ4 and have only played a few games. I decided to play at the lower levels and concentrate on learning the game (strategies, mechanics etc) before moving up. My goal is to achieve each type of victory to get a feel for the kind of strategies for each type of victory. So far...
