Books/Films that inspire you to play Civ

How about podcasts? Dan Carlin's Hardcore History series is absolutely wonderful. In his latest segment on the Mongols, he talks about how they invaded Northern and Western China with their horse archer maneuvers and eventually adopted some advanced siege tactics. After that, Genghis made...

Best Beliefs for a War Relegion?

Faith healers is decent. But, really, you don't even need that to win wars. Just get God of Messengers or something for the tech boost instead. The happiness beliefs (ceremonial burial, asceticism, and the other +2 happiness from temples) are the best ones for a puppet empire.

After the Patch - Pillaging heals units - Thoughts?

Besides the buff to the Danes and mounted units, it (in general) gives a nice boost to offensive players. People who prefer to go tall will definitely not like this patch. Conquest victories got easier while culture/science victories may have gotten a bit harder (it's hard to say. Many people...

The single most critical Social Policy

Most important policy for me would probably be the free settler from the liberty policy tree. It doesn't seem so strong on paper, but in the grand scheme of things, the free settler probably makes the biggest impact in most of my games. I'm fairly confident I could win ~90% of my games even if I...

Mounted units! What are they good for? aka why mounted units have been sidelined

They're useful for grinding down a huge AI carpet of doom by sniping a city over and over again.

    Deity domination win

Mystz0r, you just described my preferred settings pretty well. Unique units (e.g. Hoplites, Legions+Ballistas, Mohawk Warriors, etc) help tons in the early game. Otherwise, you might want to get pikemen before you go on the offense. I've pulled off successful wars with just catapults, but those...

What skill level do you play at?

Still moving up to deity. I can win immortal most of the time, deity is still ~1 out of 2.

    TSG41 Game in Progress

First GOTM for me. Quickly settled two cities. Made the blunder of not settling a coastal city, so I couldn't explore properly when I got astronomy. Policies - Tradition opener and then liberty to get free worker and policy to reduce culture requirement increase for settling new cities...

    Liberty start on Immortal+

Hey, OP, you just described most of the games I play. I almost always take liberty because I always go wide rather than tall. Happiness is really the major limiting factor for me, and meritocracy helps lots to alleviate that. Nothing like that in tradition. Furthermore, I don't build wonders...

    Winning on Diety

Easy solution for me: war. War, war, war, war, war. Classical wars, medieval wars, renaissance wars, whatever. Practice good military tactics and you can beat an AI armed with superior unit quantity and quality (which is just about always on deity). If you can stay in the middle of pack with...

    The Huns-the strongest civ?

They are very strong. Battering rams are good for taking out one or two (if you're lucky) neighbors on deity. However, they upgrade to trebuchets, and horse archers, which can get the march promotion very easily, upgrade to knights. So, even though their main advantage is in the classical age...

best way to win on higher difficulties

There's really no best way. You have to play to the map and other civs. Are you relatively isolated and well defended? Go for culture. Very possible on immortal/deity. Are you ahead in tech but can't really launch an offensive? Go for science. Are you behind in tech but have a huge...
