The new colony gets 2 free defenders and all of your techs and becomes your vassal, your units stay in the cities, but remain yours. You can grant independence by clicking on the big fist next to exit in the F1 menu, it will then bring up a menu of which cities are eligible for that.

the time it takes t research your techs is relative, I've had the entire tree researched by the 1600's

I never see how getting conquest is possible unless you are purposely razing cities instead fo keeping them to avoid domination.
