    is this game winnable?

Just from the screenshot, you're in unhappiness so you're not getting the crucial rationalism +10% beakers. Pretty much no excuse for that if you're going for science.

    First Impressions

OK, I've actually spent a lot of time just reading the civlopedia and breaking down the tech tree. My massively anal-retentive nature has made me unable to play a game past the 50th turn. I'm certain this is a personal flaw on my part but here are my first impressions of the game from a...

Dear Firaxis, do you hate eyes?

I feel like the map looks really flat and painted on. It appears to be a complete downgrade from Civ 5 in the graphics department.

    How to play wide?

Wouldn't you, even in an ultra-wide empire, want maximum growth in the capital, for a ton of important reasons, namely the ability to construct wonders, max gold from trade routes and city connections, fast construction of time-sensitive units, particularly archaeologists, spaceship parts, etc...

    How to play wide?

I think in deity any more than 4 pre NC cities will be uncompetitive with less cities. There's a great case for staking off land for post-NC expansion though and IMO that hinges heavily on lux availability, trade, and religion strength.

    Longbows vs. Chu-Ko-Nus?

What is to be gained from having that discussion? It's simply a fact that when a unit fights, some significant percentage of the time it will be bonused by a great general. Let's state that percentage to be 60% for the sake of this example. This means on average that the LBM has an average...

    Longbows vs. Chu-Ko-Nus?

That's practically pointless because the units do not exist in a vacuum unless you use a game editor or got the unit from a military city state. It's like considering the merits of a keshik without considering that it has a +1 movement bonus.

    Longbows vs. Chu-Ko-Nus?

When you take away the general the comparison becomes impractical because the vast majority of offensive war is fought with a great general bonus.

    Caravans - food or science?

This is one of the few things that are balanced well within the game IMO, I'd guess that the expected value of an early trade route versus an early food caravan is quite close. My personal policy is that if close to two civs, I research sailing asap and send them two trade routes. If only one...

    Longbows vs. Chu-Ko-Nus?

I'd like to see a reasonable number of trials of attempting to get a deity pangaea domination victory with the following two separate conditions: 1. You play as england and the only military units you're allowed to use are the the warrior line up to longswordsmen, the archer line up to...

    Early war advice

For early war, try 2 city honor with a civ that has a decent early UU. Especially arabia or mongols because then you can focus on chariot archers, which can be used to take at least the first capital before they upgrade to amazing keshiks or camels.

America - The Civilization of Contradictions

The only reason the UU could possibly suck is because pure melee have limited application. Outside of that, its one of if not the best infantry units, and its never obsolete because its awesome abilities stay when you upgrade to rifleman.

    Formula for City Combat Strength?

If I'm reading that correctly it's pretty close to "by era" because the eras subdivide the tech tree into 1/8 portions (i think?) and each two eras is 25% of the tech tree so it looks like your cities get a huge bump in combat strength roughly once you are in the medieval, industrial, and atomic...

    Formula for City Combat Strength?

I'm no expert but if I had to guess I'd say that the affectors, from most important to least important, are: 1. era (unknown formula) 2. terrain (apparently a +25% on top if hill, -10% on top if desert) 3. defensive buildings (flat integer bonuses + hp based on buildings) 4. garrison unit...

    Slow Deity Science

Early war is penalized so severely that the only civs that can really get away with it are the huns, the mongols, and arabia. The latter two because chariot archers are so powerful when they upgrade to something even better when you're just taken the first few cities of your campaign, and the...
