Civilization as a game is an highly simplified human history, you just cannot present every war in a 6000 years span, and no war will last 1000 years like what happened in the game. One war will be used to represent several wars, and the willingness to conduct it.

Puppeting basically already covered vassals. The only difference is there is no figurehead begging for your mercy.
