I agree that this usually happens to popular game series, but there was really no need with Civilization. The games always hit No.1 in the charts, they already had mass appeal so no need for dumbing down. But I think Civ 5 hurt the brand, it certainly did with me I won't be pre-ordering Civ 6.

For the record, I ended up swapping out the hard drive and installing new OS. Crude, but effective. Have moved the SSD to a different PC and tried to reinitialise it as a data drive, but it does seem to be dead.
